William James' "Principles of Psychology"
    #13004232 -

I was just wondering if anyone here has read this text.

This work is pretty intimidating and was curious as to if I could actually handle it.

I am a pretty huge psychology enthusiast and this seems to sum up everything.

Thanks guys

I would recommend reading some history of psychology before beginning this. At least read some texts that discuss his ideas. I have not read Principles in its entirety, but I'm familiar with his work on psychology of religion; and by my reading of this I can tell you that it's certainly technical and difficult. But part of the problem is that this text was written at the end of the 19th century. However, it is still an important text because it helps clarify the functionalist view of psychology.

Indeed, this school of psychology, which James helped develop and build, was one of the most successful schools - so successful that it became the precursor to behaviorism via Edward Thorndike.

I say go for it. Read it, but make sure you understand what you're jumping into. Principles laid down the foundations for scientific psychology (more so than Wundt in my opinion), most of which psychologists still work with today.

No problem. If you're interested I just did a small write up for the schools of psychology. I'm hoping to be helpful.

Yes, I've have Volumes I & II (Dover Publications) since October 1979, just as I got into grad school. I am still a big fan of William James, although I have been much more interested in his philosophical psychology than his experimental psychology, so I skimmed over all those chapters on perception and the like. While sitting in a class for clinical psych majors (I was a human development major, since, with a degrees in philosophy theology, clinical psych programs wouldn't admit me) - neuropsychological assessment, the prof asked everyone in class why they were there. I answered pretty naively (considering that everyone else was a clinical psych major, knowing full well that testing was where the big money was), that I was a fan of William James, but that his scientific data was now obsolete. The prof, Dr. Coursey replied with a smile, "Well, we have a scholar in our midst," which embarrassed me, because even though it was honest, I realized how ridiculously impractical a reason to be sitting in an expensive and difficult doctoral level class. I still didn't know what I'd be able to become professionally, or where I'd live in '79.

So, if you have any plans for advanced clinical work, perhaps you would do well to spend your time with the latest scientific theorists in psychology, or the history of theories, and leave these works to the indefinite future, unless of course, like me, you are a 19th century romantic, and are one of the impractical typologies according to the MBTI (like the INTP that I am) - a dreamer. Or, you want to teach this stuff in some small private liberal arts college, perhaps in New England. Of course, I might be dreaming again and projecting onto you!

I'm not in school for Psychology or anything. I was just a fan of James' work. I am just interested in Psychology in general and the text seemed to cover everything. Reviews I've read said the information therein is still useful today. What are some examples of the latest scientific theorists, if you will.

Thanks! Whatever you feel like sending is fine. I'm reading one of Grof's books currently, and I've read several, but little of Bohm (just enough to 'get it').

I got all these in a HUEG archive, so I haven't read much of Bohm since there's about a thousand others I'd like to read, but I've read three of Grof's, and I just started reading The Ultimate Journey.

Read LSD Psychotherapy to get most of his books and thoughts in one mushroomesque heroic dose.

Hey, I read The Ultimate Journey this past winter (got it from MAPS), and I'm now reading Psychology of the Future, although, I've set it aside to read ChristoPaganism and a book on self-mutilation, for my work with kids.
