My Diet - cut out grains?
    #12955971 -

After reading the superfoods thread i wanted to ask you guys advice on whether i should cut brown rice out my diet?

I'll keep it short as possible & just state my rough diet:

Wake up smoothie - coconut water/coconut, figs, banana, strawberry, flax & purple grape juice (cacao as a treat)
Then i'll generally exercise intensely & right after have another smoothie of - cucumber, alfalfa sprouts, barley grass & spirulina

Then ill make a huge stir fry for lunch & save some for dinner - broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, canned beans, sprouted beans, carrots, green beans, courgette, tomatoe, garlic, onion, lemon & a bit of fish... and brown rice (plus a generous amount of coconut oil!)
I was thinking cut out the rice & add parsnips to the stir fry to replace the carbs?

I also eat a handful of cashews & brazil nuts/rasins & love eating mangoes

Any suggestions in general are welcome!

I agree to keep the brown rice. Knowing that you have a good grasp on your diet and are therefore very in tune with your own body, you're probably eating brown rice because it's working for you. If you want to experiment you can always cut it out of your routine temporarily and see what changes, then make the according adjustments. I believe one can be very healthy without grains, but also with them. I think it's the overconsumption of complex carbohydrates in general that can lead down some slippery slopes, especially in combination with refined sugar. Nonetheless the body knows best. Consult its wisdom.

Chron, I hope you don't mind if I jump in. I was going to ask a very similar question.

I have heard some opinions across the board on grains, and look forward to hearing more opinions here.

But more particularly I was actually wondering if in the same context, there are any opinions on Quinoa and Amaranth. These are seeds to be technical...

But then again, they are often classified in culinary circles as whole grains or like them. They definitely taste pretty similar to whole grains, and seem to feel pretty similar in the tract, and offer a similar balance of "daily values".

What's the word on Quinoa and Amaranth?

Chronic, I'm curious what you do for exercise.

I was working out pretty intensely for a good 2 years, between running and core work (pushups and crunches).

Now, I'm trying to work everything into a holistic yoga routine, but I feel like I may be falling back from my previous power routine. Not to mention, in the process sometimes its a little to easy to relax into the poses.

I have mostly gentle Vinyasa yoga training, although I did take another class with a crotchety old woman who was pretty intense. So I know you do yoga, what is the balance for you? Is your yoga intense?

And non-white rice is going to be fine.  I much prefer quinoa or buckwheat though, way more protein and minerals.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

Well my routine is sat infront of me after writing it out at work last night, so...

Ill usually try & start with an hours bike ride, but if it looks like rain ill just do this:

Yoga:
Half Moon Bends/Backbend/Forward bend
Hindu Pushups
Pigeon
Gate
Camel
Mahamudra
Tibetan Rite 4
Boat (plus russian twist with kettlebell)
Leg Raises
Spine twists
Warrior 1/2/3 (with kettlebell)
Triangle/reversed (with kettlebell)

Kettlebell:
Deadlifts
Side presses
Figure 8
Swings
Lunges
Figure 8
Swings
Halos
Pushups (w/rotating pushup discs)
Rows
Pistol Grip Curls

Figure 8
Swings

then do the Yoga routine once more...

Thats my current routine for monday, wednesday, thursday & friday, tuesday ill just hit what feels good to hit usually lots of pushups, swings, figure 8s & russian twists, sunday ill go for a bike ride & stick to yoga, saturday rest. Obviously some days i push harder than others...  i used to just do yoga & bike riding, with dumbells only once a week, but now i want to be strong & toned as well as flexible so got on the kettlebells hard!

OK taken from the book 80/10/10 Diet by Douglas Graham:

Grains. Creatures that naturally eat grains, which are the seeds of grasses, are called "granivores." A similar term, "graminivore," refers to species whose primary diet consists of grasses. Many birds in nature live on the seeds of grasses and weeds. Included among the thousands of grass seeds that exist throughout nature are wheat, rice, oats, rye, and barley -all of which humans developed as a result of their mastery of nature only within the last 10,000 years.
Of course, in nature we would all reject grass seeds as foods. First, they grow in a form we can neither chew nor digest. Grain-eating possess a "crop," a pouch in their throats or gullets, where the grains they swallow whole are allowed to germinate, thereby becoming digestible. Grains are indigestible raw, but even cooked, the complex carbohydrates in them require great digestive effort to break down.
Heavy on starches, grass seeds such as wheat berries would gag us if we attempted to eat the equivalent of a spoonful or two (assuming we could gather them, and remembering that they would have their husks intact, as we would have to eat them in nature) Further, eating a tablespoon of raw flour made from the seeds of any cereal grain would also produce a gag response because it is so dry.
Thus, even though most of the human race presently consumes grains and starches, we can reject them as natural human fare. The fact that grass seeds neither attract, tantalize, nor arouse us in their raw natural state should amply indicate to you that we were not granivores in nature before we mastered fire. Instead of being a palate-tingling delight, these complex-carbohydrate foods in their natural state are a torturesome affair.

In the raw-food world, creative chefs have devised recipes that utilize soaked lentils, wild rice, oats and other grains. The dishes they create from these easy-to-swallow yet still substantially indigestible "staples" allow them to replicate many of the tastes and textures we once enjoyed with cooked food. In all cases, however, grains, starchy tubers, and legumes create nutritional, digestive, and health problems for those who eat them. Even when soaked and raw, grains are acid forming in a body that needs to be slightly alkaline.

Complex Carbohydrates and Disease
Many research studies link diets high in complex carbohydrates to negative health conditions. The gluten-containing grains (primarily wheat, but also rye, barley, and oats) contain at least fifteen opioid sequences, which are strongly addictive, morphine-like substances that have potent psychoactive properties and produce serious neurological disorders, constipation, urinary retention, nausea, vomiting, cough suppression, and other symptoms.
Gluten intolerance (celiac disease) contributes to or causes a wide range of other diseases, including asthma, arthritis, chronic fatigue, Crohn's disease, Type 2 diabetes, depression, eczema, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, lymphoma, and gastrointestinal cancers. Gluten intolerance may also be linked to autism, schizophrenia, and several autoimmune disorders.

And there are many many information in the previous mentioned book. I highly recommend it for everyone who would like to feel free and full of energy. It's not just another brain washing money making diet book IMHO. For me all make sense. Determing our true dietary nature...we are not carnivores, we are not herbivores, we are not starch eaters, we are not nuts, high fat food eaters and we are not omnivores (this is a stupid concept, no animal eats all categories of food), we are...

Chronic, that is intense.

So it seems to be the general consensus that quinoa is not much different in structure than grains? I mean, besides certain benefits such as a complete protein, it is not much different? This is why I asked about quinoa in the particular context of this thread, in light of this new-carbohydrate concern. For instance, like Rapatorics discourse...

In short, I want to know how this line is drawn. Is "grain" a simplified way of referring to carbohydrate rich foods in general (that would actually include such foods as quinoa and amaranth?
