First time casing could have cobweb. Need help
    #1291332 - 02/08/03 02:31 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

This is my first grow and I did a casing but I think I might be growing cobweb mold. Its really hard for me to tell ive never seen a healthy casing or cobweb mold. It almost looks like a white fuzz over the top of the casing it doesnt smell at all. Could someone show me a picture of a healthy casing I looked in the gallery but didnt see any good pictures of what it should look like. Is there a easy way to tell?

pretty much. another really good indicator is that mycelium grows IN the substrate first and then after very deep colonization begins to "fuzz" up and off the substrate. cobweb pretty much grows right across the top and not really down in there and also very quickly. mycelium is an opaque white while cobweb is grayish and not very thick until later stages. hope that helps...

well from what your saying it sounds like its definitely cobweb. If it is in fact cobweb should I toss it or can it be saved. One more thing is cobweb poisonous?

If the h202 doesn't work, you can apply another top layer. Just sterilize a spoon, scrap and take the infected top layer out and apply a new sterilized layer.

Ok this is really freaking me out. I got some h2o2 today filled my spray bottle with 50/50 and I went to look at the casing and now it looks totally different then it did last night when I posted this. It actually looks like thick ropes of white mycelium now. There are still some cobweb looking spots I tried spraying them but nothing happened. I was almost 100% sure it was cobweb last night I am really confused now. If I let it grow into mushrooms and it was cobweb could I get sick or die from eating them?

don't freak man it's all right, I'm going through the exact same thing. I've been spraying with a h2o2 and water mix that seems to have slowed down and killed some of my cobweb and I believe thats all I can do right now as for the fruits being inedible I'm not sure but I doubt it.

if u do everything you can and this thing, that you are not sure what it is, still exists just throw it out. there is a rule here: better be safe than sorry!
so always when u have weird colours or smells in your terrarium just throw out the content

Well I pulled it out of the incubator for now. I wish I had a camera but the casing kinda looks green now I really dont know its a very light shade of green but I dont know for sure I scratched it with a knife and the soil under neath the top layer of mycelium or mold looks fine. Im having a really hard time telling if its contam but can it go from cobweb to green mold?

here's a pic of the last cobweb that killed my casing, sprayed it with h202 solution and the casing started turning green too, dumped the whole thing.

Actually due to the last failure I have totally revamped my set up, I got new casing dishes, re did my grow chamber with bubbler setup, and have a single cake grow chamber I am going to try with my next set of jars.
