Cobweb AGAIN! How do i salt this bitch?!
    #1697772 - 07/09/03 12:08 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys, I keep getting cobweb mold on my casings, the last time i just quit... this time i am fighting back. I took the cover off my casing so it has really low humidity. The casing isn't 100% colonized yet. I am spraying it with 1.5% H202 about once a day, I have heard good stuff about salt how do i use it? How much salt should i put on there? Like a dusting or a patching or what? I caught it probably a day after it started to smell.

I never had the opportunity to test this but i believe that if you make a very thin powder by crushing the salt and sprinkling it over the casing, it will be fine.
Then mist the terrarium with a h2o2:h2o solution, give it air and light. Watch out Rh level in this case, it may drop down considerably.

Currently the casing is not in a terrarium. What i did was i pulled the cover off so that there is really low humidity, I then mist it every now and then so it doesn't get too dry for the mycelium. It's at about 75f and is in an open room so it has 100% air exchange all the time. I was wondering specifically how much salt to use, but it seems that the cobweb is all but gone, it doesn't smell after a 3% h202 misting and 1 day out of the terrarium. Cutting the humidity down and giving constant air exchange seem to be adequate in my case... I hope anyways. Can't cobweb go dormant and then come back and kick your ass?

You bet it can... It will also hide and infect other casings if everything isnt cleaned up after an infection.

How sure are you it?s indeed cobweb?
It seems to me that mycelium is often mistaken for cobweb.

I am not a professional or even good mycologist yet, but i am pretty sure i know what cobweb is. I actually couldn't see it much, it was the smell that disturbed me. I am sure you have had dozens of casings with cobweb so you are well aquainted with that fermented, slighty fruity and sweet smell of cobweb. I had it once before, so i am pretty sure that's what it is now. Unless what i had before wasn't cobweb.... in any event it's not the smell of a normal mushroom culture.
Visually, you can tell cobweb from mycelium because it has small black dots in it (i am assuming those are it's spores but i don't know), and it is grayish after a day or two. The growth pattern of cobweb is also quite different from that of healthy mycelium. As i mentioned before, I couldn't really see this stuff because i caught it before it popped up, so i had to go by the smell.

>fermented, slighty fruity and sweet smell of cobweb

This sounds(smells) like bacterial contamination.

>Visually, you can tell cobweb from mycelium because it has small black dots in it

No.
What you are describing would fit the black pin mold.

did you use h202 from the beginning or after you noticed the cobweb(or whatever it is)?....I have found h202 to be excellent at preventing contams but its never helped too fight them once they have shown themselves...IME anyways

...every person I have ever heard has described cobweb as having a sweet and almost fermented smell, Perhaps they are wrong but I doubt it. What do you think it smells like Anno? And as for the black dot thing.... you can see tiny black dots in it after it has matured unless the patch of stuff that looked like cobweb, smelled like cobweb and acted like cobweb was not actually cobweb. I used H202 after i noticed the contam.
Anyways, after putting it back in the incubator with a cover to test if i had actually killed it or if it just went dormant, the smell came back. I Scraped off the casing layer, salted the top of it, sprayed with 1.5% h202 solution then flipped the casing and recased with Jiffy mix, we'll see how that does.

>What do you think it smells like Anno?

It has no particular distinctive smell. What you describe is a bacterial contamination smell.

>you can see tiny black dots in it after it has matured unless the patch
>of stuff that looked like cobweb

As I said, this is NOT cobweb.

This looks like cobweb, the parts in the middle of the picture.

What do you want to imply?
I said that the growth in the picture looks like cobweb, NOT what you described further up.

...I thought you were saying that the growth in the picture looked like cobweb but was NOT cobweb. It was just a question of misunderstanding.
