Why aremy cakes pinning?
    #1292470 - 02/09/03 04:13 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I have some very colonized cakes in my terrarium that just aren't pinning. I have a perlite humidification tek with a heating pad under neath. Unfortunetly i don't have a hydrometer or a thermometer to check my levels. But I have been giving them indirect light for more than a week now and i am not getting any pins. I am just kinda confused and frustrated. Any help appreciated.

It kinda looks like my cakes aren't making pins but rather creating more fluffy mycelia. I heard that has something to do with temperature being too high or something.

cakes arent as easy as they are made out to be. there can be a whole lotta variables but i suggest just waiting it out...continue to fan and mist a few times a day...and if they dont pin may i suggest crumbling them up and casing them.

what you could do is not mist for a day or two just fan..the lower humidity might trigger pinning...

You may want to check the temp; depending on where you live, a heating pad may provide to much heat. What strain are you using? On average, my cakes take 14-18 days to pin. Just give them proper air exchange and more time.

I am using the PF classic strain. And i live in Santa Cruz CA. I have also been wondering about my heating system. I can't control how much heat my pad produces, what kind of things do you people use? I turned off the heating pad for 2 days and i still didn't get any pins. Though I had a lot of hyphael knots and something i thought were becoming pins but never made it.

It sounds like your temp is too high. I have heard that the fuzzy mycelial growth may be due to the humidity being too high. The heating pad would increase the rate of evaporation and hence the higher humidity. Try giving them a cold shock to initiate pinning. The higher temp is for colonizing. Give them more air too.

What is the best kind of heating that i can use in combination to perlite? I have read lots of perlite success stories, but they all neglect to say what kind of heating they are using. Heating will affect evaporation greatly.

did you ever try cold shocking it (them)?

my heating pad has three settings, i leave it on low and its perfect.

if you think you may have to much heat try putting spacers or legs on your terrarium to give a little air flow, it will bring down your temp. It would probably be a good idea to do that anyway since heating pads CAN BE a fire hazard, (with to much pressure and all).

the fluffy mycelium is a good sign, i would say it means your humiditys great, with perlite i dont think you can go wrong with humidity, THAT IS UNLESS ITS TOO SATURATED!!!

perlite works by wisping tiny h20 molecules into the air due to its porous structure, and if its filled with water it cant do that.

i just drain mine in a strainer and that gives my a good "starting" saturation point, if i feel the need for more water i add som h2o+h2o2 mix to it, just like a capfull or two per gallon.

and finally did you allow for invitro pinning?

best of luck!!

You can do without a hygrometer but you really need a thermometer. How can you hope to create a pinning enviroment if you can't even tell the temperature?

Yeah. I c what you mean. I need to go buy a thermometer today. I though mushroom growth wood be so much easier. The MMGG made it all sound soo simple. I didn't wait for invitro pins I just waited for my cakes to be covered in white. They also seemed kinda dry, my cakes that is. I have problems galore.

hehhe. PM's...private messages. You should see a little envelope flashing at the top of your screen if he has messaged you. Anyways, What i was thinking, was that maybe you should try double end casing them. Just do a search for double end casing tek here, or go to nansnook.com and look in the archives for a picture version. I was having delayed pinning, and did this, had tons of pins on some of my cakes within a couple days, 7 grams dried off two half pints first flush. First grow.

I made an attempt to use some vermiculate on both top and bottom of my cakes to case. But that didn't seem to help too much. Though i think i messed up on the part about wetting them. should i continually keep adding moisture to them every couple of days?

Double ending would be a very good idea

I dont suppose you dunked either hey?

Also, with the PF classic strain its a good idea to wait for invitro pinning, that is of course if your doing cakes, if it were casings 100% colonization would be fine.

Like PDU said though, double end those things man! no cake should go naked IMO!!!

it could be the solution your looking for

Alright then. I'll try a dunk and double end casings and come back in a while and tell ya'll my results. How long should i dunk my cakes for, how long should i have each cake submerged?

When i dunk i wash out my jars, fill half way with COLD water, then dunk the cakes for about 12-20 hrs,  for your first time i would go with 12 hrs.  i usually give cakes on there 2nd or third flush a 20 hr dunk.

plus if your double ending it, then i expect you would have an appropriate water content available for your cakes.  Also if you humidity is too low then this will help to TEMPORARILY counteract that

good luck man, things sound good...
