if you don't know anything about whiskey, i'd start with a blend. cutty sark, j&b and glenlivet are all great and affordable. if i'm spending $40 on a bottle i go with a single malt. my personal favorite is macallan.

single malt. very clean with a slight hint of spice. delicious. the 10 year if fine, the 12 year is even finer. i was given a bottle of the 18 year for my wedding night. it was like drinking velvet.

glenfiddich, glenmorangie and oban are all excellent single malts as well.

oh, and one more thing to remember about whiskey. blends are fine on the rocks, but single malts are meant to be taken neat. adding ice to a single malt is a waste of good hooch imo. at most you'll want to add a drop of water to a single malt. not a splash of water, just a single drop.
