Recommend A Scotch Whiskey
    #12846159 -

I loooove whiskey, but have never tried any scotch.  I'm planning on going to get me a bottle to try out this friday when I get paid, but really don't know what to buy.  I love Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey 101, but I really have no idea how scotch compares to those, so I was hoping ya'll could help me out.

What should I buy for my first bottle of Scotch? ($30-$55 for a handle price range)

Scotch is generally < than bourbon until you get past the $40 mark.  I find a $25 bourbon is usually better than a $35 scotch.  But once you start going $50+ scotch is way worth it.

And only opt for single-malt.  Blended scotch just doesnt capture the magic.

Glen Goyne is fantastic if you can find it.

Try glenlivet 15yr or the Nadurra 16yr Cask Strength.

the 12 yr glenlivet/ 12yr glenfiddich taste pretty bland to me.

glenmorangie 10yr is also fantastic and pretty affordable.

Smell deep, savor, sip slowly, enjoy!

A good single malt scotch does to your sense of taste what a good dose of mushrooms do to your sense of sight.

Decent whisky tastes like something.  Like apples, or oak, or vanilla, or smoke, etc.

A really good whisky tastes like a kaleidoscope.

That doesn't really give me an idea as to what to expect in terms of taste with scotch.  Is it as sweet as American whiskey?  Is it smokey?  Is it hot?  Is it rough, is it smooth, etc etc... ??? (I'm talking about quality scotch, not cheap scotch)

That was exactly my point.

the terms rough/smooth apply to other alcohols intended to get you drunk.  as in "man that goes down smooth" = "i can drink it fast without having to taste it". Like how bud light is smooth, but good beer tastes good.  (just a pet peeve i guess)

The point of scotch is the sense-experience not the intoxication.  In short, yes scotch is smooth, but its so much more than that.

some are sweeter, Islay scotch is heavily peat-smokey, higher alcohol ones are hotter.  But you really just need to get a couple of different types and try them to understand the experience!

Glenlivet is good, usually a good bottle will cost $55~60 USD (in US).
