Ahh, She'll probably be alright.  Its funny how one rich Westener girl who is sailing around in a boat for no good reason, gets so much attention.
While refugees crammed into leaky often falling apart boats, with little food, running for there lives are shunned and put into prison when they hit
land...  Funny how life works.

yep.  Thats the cool part about being born in America.

I definitely see pushing your kids towards good wholesome goals, but sail around the tip of South America, or sail the coast. circumnavigating our MASSIVE planet probably wasn't the best idea.

I don't see the point in sailing across the world by yourself.

Talk about being bored and lonely...well unless I had drugs, then I would be chipper

Either way.. my post was mostly trying to gear to the fact its pointless going across the ocean by yourself. It's an accident waiting to happen, ESPECIALLY on a small ship

Hmm I think it would get boring if you weren't in rough seas.  There must be many boring parts, nothing to look at but ocean.

You know the Australian girl who did it caught  1 FISH!.  The whole time she was out there she caught one fucking fish.

It is pretty pointless sailing around the world.  It would be fun though.  If my kid wanted to do it I'd let them, I'd just say "Well, you might die."

the responses in this thread are hilarious

but...
you can't say its dumb to let a kid do this just because she's in trouble. some kid (12-14 maybe) climbed mount everest safely a month ago.

Anytime you put yourself intentionally at risk for a record/achievement its easy for other people to say you're a retard or whatever. but think about it, she made it all the way to the indian ocean...she obviously knew what she was doing.

for all we know there could have been a mechanical malfunction entirely out of her control.

if it was just some random kid who was like, "fuck this im sailin round the ocean, later MOM AND DAD" and they just agreed it would be another story.

it does seem kind of like a dumbfuck idea...but like i said above....

If she's so keen to go around the world she should swim the rest of the way.  Now she's wasting our tax money to go look for her.  She should have
To pay for the costs of sending a ship to look for her.

Hell, if my kid came up to me and said they wanted to try hard as hell to achieve an enormous goal, I'd at least consider it.

I can't believe the replies in this thread.

If the girl was a mature and competent sailor, i would absolutely support it as a parent. If she dies, she dies - but good on her for pushing the limits. I hope she's alright, i hope she finishes, and i hope the rescue effort doesn't cost a bunch of tax payers money.

It was first done by Robin Lee Graham in 1965 - http://www.bluemoment.com/dove.html

He documented his journey as it happened in National Geographic and also wrote an excellent and inspiring book about it, called "Dove."
