Preserving fresh-picked mushrooms

I picked a good bit of pann subbs not even 30 minute ago. I put them in a plastic bag for now. How many days do you think they will last just as they are, in the bag and fresh. I know drying it is the only for sure way to preserve mushrooms but I'm just curious as to how long fresh mushrooms stay edible, and the best way to store them while they're fresh.

Take them out of the plastic bag, they will sweat and rot. Stick them in a paper bag and stick them in the fridge, they should last a few days.

If you want them to last longer Fan dry them for 24 hours, spread out over newspaper. Then stick in a sealable tub with a small fan blowing around, and a container of desiccant for another 24 hours. Seal the tub during the process, and they will turn out cracker dry (so the stems snap). This is the method that I use, but there are lots of other methods.

I used to wrap mine in paper towel and place them in the bottom drawer of the fridge.They stay good in there for weeks. They would actually dry up in a few days and then they were preserved just as if I dried then in a dehydrator.

Plastic bags are the quickest way to make a mushroom rot.

I don't even have a fan so that's out of the question, or else I would use that in the first place. This may seem like a crazy idea but what about air conditioning? If instead of a fan, use the air vent.

I don't see why that wouldn't work.  Cool air will take a little longer, but it will actually preserve the potency better. 

I give it a :thumbup: unless someone else sees why it's a bad idea?

You could also try using the oven at lowest temperature, with the door open :thumbup:

I'm telling you if you wrap then in paper towel and put them in the bottom drawer of the fridge the will eventually dry up and be well preserved. It also helps them mantian their potency.

totally, I actually stumbled upon this method by accident. I was saving some sample till i got a positive ID, then forgot all about them in the fridge. A few weeks later I found them again perfectly dried and preserved. Im not sure about mantaining potency, they were nothing active, but I still use this method to preserve my edible finds.

I plan on eating them tonight and so I put them into a small plastic container until a few hours later, when I'll eat them. Hopefully that is better than a plasic bag. Anyway, what about that orange juice myth.....about making the trip shorter but stronger. Is this true? I know with lemon juice it is, but I don't have that.

Orange juice will work too.  It's just an acidic environment pre-converting the psilocybin to psilocin.

The best way to preserve fresh picked mushrooms is to keep them in a plastic kroger bag, or a paper bag, and put them in the fridge. Never keep mushroom's in zip-lock bags, they will rot very fast this way. 

I've had mushrooms last for a week or more by just putting them in a kroger bag and sticking them in the fruit department in your fridge. :thumbup:

I think one of those plastic baggies for weighing/purchasing fruit and vegetables. Tbh, I kinda had to think about it myself.

I like to salt mushrooms. It's cheap, quick, easy, effective, doesn't smell up the house, doesn't attract any unwanted attention, and kills any and all bugs (especially slugs, grubs, worms, et al) almost instantly. I even bring a Tupperware container full of salt on forays sometimes.

Just buy one of those big boxes of kosher salt for like $3 and a few disposable tupperware containers (pick the size that works for you). Start with a half-inch layer of salt on the bottom, then alternate mushrooms and salt 'till you get to the top. Then throw them into a drawer and forget about them.

When you're ready to eat just brush off all the salt, and rehydrate in liquid. If they're too salty just drain them and add more liquid, but you might lose some flavor.

Yeah. Kroger is just a store like wal-mart, except Kroger is more generally distributed within the south-east states.

Salting isn't a technique I had heard before, but it makes sense. What about dry rice?
