I Ching. Divination or masturbation?
    #12623780 -

Has anybody used the I Ching here?

Recently I've been using the coin method to give new perspectives on tribulations and decisions and it seems to have things to offer. I'm intrigued but don't know what my position is yet towards this classic. Phillip K. Dick said that it gave advice "beyond the particular". For me this seems a great way of understanding this text.

What I don't understand is that after trying to find a definitive answer on "what side of the coin means what?" and "what symbolises a changing line?" it seems that a lot of sites instruct different methods and some even say it doesn't matter at all. How can this be true? Surely this means two people with the same issue, who threw the same coins but with a different heads/tails system (assuming coin method) will receive different advice.

Is it simply that every hexagram is sufficiently intricate that it can allow a person to consider anything from a variety of angles? It's been used for so long and is so reputed that it's hard for me accept that this is entirely the case.

Anyone have an opinion on the I Ching? What's it all about then? Even the most skeptical scientists and such seem to be reluctant to throw it into the mumbo-jumbo bin immediately.

i think that no matter how you write it down, whether you think the "heads" is a yin or yang line, youll still get the same answer....

Later in life, Dick called the I-Ching a treacherous whore or words to that effect.

For me it's one of 64 pieces of good advice chosen at random to mix in with my own idea about the situation. This makes me look at the situation from a fresh perspective and so it helps me to avoid getting stuck in a rut and aids lateral thinking. Also adding a random element in my strategy makes me less predictable to my enemies. :hehehe:
Effective for both big and small problems. The method of divination is more or less irrelevant to me.

It has been indispensible for those days when I really don't know what to make for dinner.

I consult the I ching daily. Theres no rule on how to use it, supposedly the Yang represents the long line and the Yin represents the line broken apart. (but i'm sure you could make the long line represent Yin if you want) I usually use 6 and 9's, as to change the lines to opposites for the next hexagram. Since it's like :yinyang: 69

but there really is no rule

I found a method that works for me, and it's all about what hexagram you end up getting.

You could even pick a random hexagram, and whatever it ends up to be, is what you need at that time.

People have different means of filling their spiritual needs, and it all comes down to what you want, yeah they can just be words that can be applied to anything, but they can also be more than just words.

I've experienced some pretty uncanny situations while using the I ching and tripping, so I think there is something to it.

but thats just like, my perception man.
