Peyote and Poppy Qs
    #12622036 -

Okay, so I'm going to start growing some Peyote and Papavar Somniferum plants, so I've got a few questions.

So, I'm planning on grafting the peyote plants to pereskiopsis... what will the nutritional needs be? Surely it's not the same as though I'm just growing 1 peyote plant.
Should I place the plant outside when it's sunny, and bring it in when it's rainy? How often should I water it, once a month? Every two weeks? How much water should I give it? Is there any type of growth accelerant I should use, or will it be fine on it's own?

I should be purchasing Papavar Somniferum, the giant poppies, right? How many plants should I expect to grow if I plant 1,000 seeds? How should I take care of these?

Much appreciation for any help, I know one person probably won't be able to answer all of these questions, but even one would be extremely helpful!

Peyote wise, fertilize half strength every other to every fourth watering. You can leave it outside for the rest of the summer, if your starting from seed, you'll want to shade them.  Water when the soil becomes dry and when watering, saturate the soil.

Poppies, you need to till the shit out of the soil. you don't need anywhere near 1ooo seeds unless you've got a huge area.  Once they start growing, thin them (pull many of them out to their demise), they don't like to be crowded.  Water them, feed them.

That about does it I think.

A decent potting soil amended for cacti will have enough nutrients in it to sustain the plant for a couple of growing seasons. Some supplemental feeding can be given during this time also to speed things along. Low Nitrogen ferts are generally preferred.

It's best to have it in a position where it can be left. Constantly moving any plant can cause it to get confused and this has been known to cause problems. A nice bright windowsill works well if it gets a few hours of light a day. Full sun is good but Lophophora do prefer some shade.

This will depend on the size of the container you use and also what the soil is made up of. If it is high in organic matter it will take longer to dry out as if you had used a mineral mix(recommended for lophs). Try and aim for a mix that holds water for a few days and then dries up. Lophophora's taproot doesn't like to be kept wet. I wouldn't worry about growth accelerants yet as you need to learn the growth habits of these plants before you start to push them along.

Here's some reading about soil mixes for different cacti. Read it as you will learn from it. link

Yes, P. somniferum are the ones you want. I'm guessing this because you're in the EG....Out of 1000 seeds you can expect to have half to three quarters germinate so if you do the math you could have anywhere between 500-750+ plants...A lot of work for a novice.

They're easy as pie to grow, cultivate a patch of earth, spread seeds on top, water in with a spray of water, wait 15 days or so and BAM! They will have sprouted. This is of course if you sow them at the right time of year.

Now on to how you look after them, I suggest reading this as it cover most of what you need to know. If you have more questions post them here and I'm sure someone will have an answer for you.

That are a lot of variables that need to be known to e able to properly answer those questions. What is the soil mix, pot type, pot size, what is your climate like...? Anyways try not to make it into a math equation.

If grafted to pereskiopsis water the soil until it is completely wet, and allow soil to dry in between waterings.

Growth accelerators are not necessary. When the graft is young, I would keep it from receiving direct rainfall, but when it is older it shouldn't be a problem.
