When would be the best time to start growing poppies outside? I live in the south and how long do they usually take to grow? Thanx

Usually you plant in Autumn for harvest in Spring.

You might get frost/snow though so I don't know.

Could try them indoors under some lights.

if you live at a lattitude where it doesn't frost over you can plant in the autumn for harvest in spring. Basically you can do two harvests a year if you live in a good climate. I can't do that cause I live at a higher lattitude, so i can plant in autumn but they won't be harvestable by spring. I plant in early spring and harvest mid summer.

When i plant it takes about 3 months from planting to harvest.

You can put them out in the fall, they will be dormant over the winter (unless you have a very mild winter, then they will just continue to grow). Once the temperatures are right, they will sprout, grow, and you will harvest sometime in the summer. The plant will let you know when it is ready for the harvest.

I think the fall is best time to plant in the south. Mine are growing right along and will need the winter growth to get big for spring. Here it gets too hot in the summer so it's one crop or nothing. Poppies can take any amount of cold as long as they don't get buried deep in snow. They freeze and thaw out, no prob.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Yep, now in the South is the best. Give them rocky, not clayey soil with lots of room for the thin roots to take. They grow in weed-like conditions so lean water, soil and light. The sprouts are weak so they need to be nurtured by basically leaving them alone with only the minumun amount of watering. Best to wait for rain to water as in the conditions above the soil stays damp for quite awhile.

Fun to throw out a ton of seed and then eat poppy sprouts for a couple days to thin them out. Not sure if a few handfulls of sprouts enough to give a high though, but one can hope and dream.

NOLA rules. Hail King Rex in just a week or so!
