Cactusdan's Cactus soil Mixes

Okay guys and gals(do we have any here?),

Since I have seen multiple request for soil mixes I will post the ones that work for me.

They are by no means set in stone and I'd be happy to see people elaborate on them.

However, they work for me and I'm happy with the results

Here we go!

Cactusdan's Trichocereus Mix
  • 2 parts Commercial Cactus Soil
  • 1 part Perlite
  • 1 part Grit/Paver's Sand

Cactusdan's Mineral Mix
I use this for my slow growing globulars i.e. Lophophora, Ariocarpus, Astrophytum, etc.
  • 1 part Commercial Cactus Soil
  • 1 part Crushed Red Lava Rock
  • 1 part Oil Absorbent(Montmorillonite Clay)
  • 2 parts Perlite

Cactusdan's Fusion Mix
I use this for my mature grafts
  • 1 part Crushed Red Lava Rock
  • 2 parts Commercial Cactus Soil
  • 1 part Oil Absorbent(Montmorillonite Clay)
  • 1 part Perlite

You always seem to know everything and anything about Cacti Cactusdan. They always help me out so much. =D (+5, I should have done this a long time ago.)

Thanks mate!

Glad I could help, and in all honesty although I have a decent knowledge base on cacti, much of it would have never been available to me had it not been for the members on here.

:congrats: and thank you all for helping me grow as well as allowing me to help you.

Nice mineral mix Dan..... I know that Lophs and whatnot should have very little organic material because they don't necessarily like that particular form of nutrients, but do the minerals themselves provide adequate nutrients for them? What nutrients do Lava Rock, Clay, and Perlite end up having, or releasing into the soil? Or do you simply give them a liquid fertilizer occasionally?

They seem to do the trick, although I do dose them with some Schultz Cactus Ferts every 2-3 waterings.

If they're getting rain water they get most of the required nutes through that.

Mine however get tap or distilled while I'm at school or in the winter

I always go with a 50/50 mix of commercial cacti soil (miracle grow), and strain the mulch/bark/wood out of it.

Then I add 50% perlite, that is my trichocereus soil blend, very simple.

Anybody know of a good organic cacti soil?

That mix is excellent for the beginner, I still use it in a pinch, and I know of one or two guys who have been growing for years that still use similar.

For organics, I would simply replace the commercial soil with compost or worm castings. I personally also use coir in the mixes, which I have not yet turned Dan on to

I like the looks of the mineral soil, I hope to likewise create a similar yet slightly modified one.

For trichs, most mixes simply call for 50/50 'meat' (compost/commercial enriched soil, etc) and 50% drainage. It need not be much more elaborate then that IMO.

I hope to see more mineral soils as time goes, nice list so far.

Anyone tried using hydroton in cactus soil? I've read very good things but have yet to try it.

Coir is fantastic.
Next spring I am going to experiment with coir in a cacti mix.

Unrelated to cacti, this year I grew all of my container veggies in a coir, perlite, compost mix. They did amazing.

Interesting article on the Montmorillonite Clay I use in my mineral soil:

Quote:

The Tibetans in Western China, the Hunzas in Eastern Pakistan, the Georgians in Western Russia, the Armenians, the Abkhazians and the Azerbaijanis, the Vilcabamba in Ecuador, and the Titicaca in Peru routinely live to be a 120 or even 140 years old, according to Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Joel Wallach. What is more, these people don’t live in nursing homes; they live full, productive and enjoyable lives.

The reason for their longevity is that they inhabit high altitude areas where the soil contains abundant amounts of montmorillonite clay deposits, a mixture of minerals from mountains and ancient oceanic sediment consisting of seaweed, algae and other calciferous marine life that are believed to have been brought to the surface by volcanic activity and transported to a deposit by precipitation.

Thanks to the monmorillonite, which soil experts value as an exceptionally good agricultural enhancement, their crops taste better, grow faster, and are more resistant to diseases. The balance of natural colloidal minerals, including the essential trace minerals present in montmorillonite are easy to assimilate and enhance the production of enzymes in all living organisms.

Dr. Edward Howell, the father of modern enzyme research, proposes that enzyme deficiency is a significant cause of premature aging and the development of numerous degenerative diseases.

Similarly, plants grown on impoverished soil, deficient of minerals and nutrients, are more vulnerable to damage from insects and diseases and produce little more than malnourished bodies. Dr. D.W. Cavanaugh of Cornell University, writes: "There is only one major disease and that is malnutrition. "

Chemical fertilizers gained a stronghold in American agriculture after it was discovered at the turn of the century that plants fed with the scientific trinity NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) could survive and look fairly good. However, 40 or more years later, concerned ecologists and agriculturists were able to prove that chemical fertilizers that are toxic and the lack of proper natural nutrients in the soil caused plant vulnerability to fungus and insects, leading to more crop loss and soil depletion.

For optimum health the human body requires more than 70 minerals, Dr. Jensen, the author of the book "Empty Harvest" and other authorities on the subject agree that it would be fairly easy to put these desperately needed minerals back into our soil.

Colloidal soil can actually boost the content of vitamins, minerals and enzymes in plants, thus benefiting every entity from the plants themselves, to animals and people.

Colloidal soil works in harmony with, and encourages, proper PH balance, humus content, micro-organisms, NK, water, sunlight and all great growing practices to create the most delicious and nutritious food possible.
Colloidal soils have been used for many years to produce colloidal minerals for man and beast, which have been proven effective in halting and before that reversing degenerative disease. Pioneers have used colloidal soil for almost a century in food production and by the native Indians for who knows how long to fertilize their corn, squash and other corps.

Colloidal soil, when added to other growing medium becomes the final link in restoring the complete electrical process between soil, plant, animal, and human. It is also beneficial in restoring agricultural land from the effects of pollution, acidification, nitrogen fixation (chemical fertilizers) that increase crop yields, chemicals to reduce or destroy mold, fungus, viruses, bugs and parasites. It even minimizes crop failure due to extreme weather or radical temperature shifts.

coir is definitely the ticket to a great soil mix. i like the sunleaves coir block. small block but it expands to 2 cubic ft of coir.

hey dan i think you could substitute the clay from the oil absorbant with the absorbant with diatomaceous earth. i bought a big ass bag for 6 bucks and can be used as insect control.

i got that idea from themallacht. he's the one who told me abiout it.
