What foreign language did yu learn and why?

I had to chose between Japanese and Spanish.  Since I grew up on the border, i already knew a lot of Spanish, and all my mexican friends spoke English anyway.  So it all came down to who do I want to be able to talk to?  The maid, or the guy that owns the company?

Me and my lady are currently teaching ourselves Chinese using the Pimsleur program.  Going decently so far - definitely not easy though.  It's hard to keep yoruself regimented enough to maintain your studies.

Edit:  Why?  Because azn languages sound amazing - and China is the most important asian economy, and likely will be throughout the majority of my lifetime.

Chinese is my next target.  But again, Ive been to China about 15 times and I think it is one of the most interesting countries Ive ever been to.

Why not learn it first?  (not trying to sound argumentative, just curious).  If you know chinese, you can get a job - in pretty much any industry, since they all do so much business over there.

I already learned Japanese 20 years ago when I lived in Japan for 4 years.  so yeah, Chinese is next, i go there sometimes on business.

Spanish, since I live in the US. This was an obvious choice even 25 years ago.

I also took several years of Latin, which of course is a great base language for the understanding of advanced English vocabulary, especially in the sciences.

I studied both in HS and college; Spanish started in 7th grade in fact. These days perhaps I would consider Chinese, or Arabic (lol).

Latin, because it improves command of the English language and scientific/medical jargon.

occupationally I've learned russian, romanian, arabic and farsi, not fluent
in any of them but I speak enough to either get my ass kicked or discover
how many troops, their movements, objectives and other pertinent intel

I've also learned a bit of japanese, spanish and chinese, I also speak some tsalagi

French in high-school. Americans really let themselves go, language wise. Most European high-school students know multiple languages... like English, Italian, French, Latin...

Russian. Its hard to learn the new alphabet but it is such a beautiful language.

I speak Hebrew -- lived in Israel for awhile.

It was a combination of lessons, books, Pimsleur CDs, and just being around it day in and day out.

gutter spanish for drug deals and american standard sign language because my mom is a deaf ed. teacher.

oh and i can do a pretty good job of lip reading english...

A bit of Latin and Italian.

I only use the first three regularly, with my French being childishly bad, my attempts at German are understandable but still laughable, which leaves English as the only foreign language that I can use effectively.

from kindergarden to 3rd grade i knew hebrew. by second grade i was able to read and write and speak hebrew.

i left that school in 3rd grade and after the years i  have forgot how almost all the language.

i still wish i knew it tho. in sixth grade i tried to re teach my self how to write it and i got about half way through but never memorized the letters.

hebrew is deffinitly a sick language.the way the vowels are used are very unique.
