I live with my parents , and I am going to use the evening to get some jars loaded with rye, as they are gone. We?ve got two PCs at home , but they are both a bit older... I tried sterilzing Rye in one , but it failed , cause the steam always came out through the valve in the top. Is this supposed to happen? Furthermore Id like to know, how exactly to reach 15 psi, as I dont have the manual for the thing. The old one had a pin in the valve with three markers. The more pressure is built up the higher this pin points out of the valve. Do I just have do heat the cooker full-up , till the marker is fully up? Anno just told me to heat on medium flame, do I have to higher the flame later on , when the pressure is already up a bit? What about steam coming out , is there supposed to be a kind of lid for the valve, or do I just have to make sure , that the temp isnt too high? thanks again, Jazz

This is dead serious!! If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it!! Pressure cookers can be very dangerous if not used properly. First of all,the cooker only needs a small amount of water in the bottom..You DON'T fill it up. If you can't find a manual for your cooker..go to a search engine like Google.com and do a search.

Holy crap!!
Yeah pinhead is right.. read read read!! Nansnook.com has a good manual for PC info... read it all!! twice!
Water should not spit out the top at all, only a small amount of steam.. do you have a weight on the stem? cuz you should!
look inside the PC, there are min and max levels for the water. dont' go over the max, !! but don't let it go dry either!!
good luck!!

>Do I just have do heat the cooker full-up , till the marker is fully up? Yes. But heat it not on fill flame, otherwise the jars night crack if they heat too fast. Also, fill only 2 cm of water in the PC, and use a rack. I know the type of the cooker you have, something like this:

>Will it ever reach 15 psi with a medium flame, or should I turn up the heat later? At first, turn the flame 3/4 up untill the pressure is reached(the third ring visible), then turn the heat down to around 1/4 , this depends on the pressure cooker and the stove.
