Cheap-ass (temporary) dessicant chamber question

I know that it is not good for your fruit to touch the dessicant it's being dried with. I don't have any wire mesh at the moment, so I was wondering if I could use this setup: bottom layer --> dessicant; middle layer --> paper towel; top layer --> fruit. I figure that the paper towel will be porus enough to allow the moisture to escape from the fruits and into the dessicant. Can anyone validate/debunk this idea?

P.S. -- I just thought of 2 things: (1) The paper towel may absorb moisture and hold it to the fruits delaying the process; then again maybe it will just wick the moisture into the dessicant satisfactorily. (2) It could be more effective if I slightly elevate the paper towel using tooth picks or something similar. Any comments? Thanks a lot.

No it works. That is what my dessicant chamber is. Make sure the whole thing is air tight though. This can be aceived using plastic wrap.

Try to fan dry your fruits for 24 hrs before the dessicant chamber. I flip mine at least once to make sure they don't stick to the towle too bad. Then put them in with your dessicant. I have been using epsom salt (magnesium sulfate heptahydrate) as a dessicant. It's works great! Heat it in the oven to dry it out before use. It will harden up as the moisture is drawn out. break up into a powder and stir/reheat unti it is all bright white.

Haha, I can see how that lost fruit would be nerve-wracking. I have a fan on them right now, in fact it's been on since 8 this morning. Some of them seem ready to go in the chamber but I think I'll let them go a little longer; it really can't hurt anyway. Good idea on the flipping the fruits. I'm going to use "rock salt" (free in my apt complex) but if it doesn't work I'll go with some epsom salt for $1.99. Thanks a lot for the tip on drying it out in the oven too. Whatever I use, I'm sure it will work out . . . thanks to both of you for your replies.

Here is a pick of my fan setup. It's not the most powerful, but it is quiet and gets the job done. The lid of the box has about 30 -1/16" holes in it on the end away from the fan.
