Can I get some feedback please?
    #12523402 -

Hi everyone. As you all can tell this is my first post. lol I've been reading everything I can find and using the search feature like crazy. Thanks to everybody that supplies this awesome info.

So, I used a 1:2 popcorn to coir for this monotub i'm workin on. It's a 64qt. tub with my sub in a turkey tray
sittin on perlite. (nevermind the open holes in the tub, they have the poly back in now)
Well I had it in a garbage bag for bout a month and was pretty good about not opening it up. well this past monday when i went to check on it, it had some pins so i figured why not get it fruiting, right?

In a nutshell, I'd appreciate some feedback on the progress my tub is making. I'm looking for corrective criticism also. The tub isn't cased and it is my first.
I do have experience on pf cakes from back in the late 90's when that tek came out.

Obviously your bulk never finished colonizing. Your coir may have been too dry when you prepared it. It's too dry now.

thanks for the feedback. the coir was hydrated in a colander and it still feels wet to the touch. I personally havent been able to identify any contams that would have made it stop colonizing and start fruiting. I think the light fuzzys in the pic is myc that hasn't consolidated. I'm by no means an expert so everyones opinion is what im lookin to read on thanks for the input

looks like you should have cased

usually ill only case anything if the moisture of the walls will touch my sub

so like monotubs i always case

it would have added some moisture back into your dry sub

but her its a learning curve

If you're lucky you might get one flush out of it before contaminates destroy it.  Opening a partially colonized substrate to fruiting conditions is a bad idea.  Your substrate is probably already contaminated it just hasn't grown enough for you to see yet.

It shouldn't take a month to colonize either.  I suspect you incubated it at too high of a temperature or had it closed up and did not provide means for gas exchange.  While fresh air is bad for a colonizing substrate it does need to breath in small amounts.

Bulk substrates can produce a lot of heat while colonizing and if they're sealed up or in some sort of insulated container the heat can build up.  I'd recommend colonizing any large substrate at 70f.

If you were to try this again, add a filter patch to your trash bag.  Cut a 2" square hole and cover it over with micropore tape or tyvek.

You can use a clear plastic bag next time so you can observe without opening and again, keep the temps low.
