Re: So I'm really ticked off about this oil spill... [Re: AsAboveSoBelow]

Fair enough, I'm not knocking jobs that require or utilize technology (though I guess I did above). I'm just trying to say that arguing that everyone should telecommute or ride bikes, etc. is downright ridiculous.  If every hipster in portland rode their bike to work (or drove hummers) it wouldnt change global consumption one decimal point.  Shit, gasoline used for transportation is less than half of the total petroleum use in the US.  Oil is far more entrenched in Western Society than a hybrid car or Email is going to fix.

One word: Telecommuting.

If you have a job that requires you to be on site, I understand. Otherwise, you should be telecommuting. It saves time and money, conserves gas and mileage; and perhaps best of all, it drastically reduces stress:

While that might work if you are a computer programmer or website designer or any number of bullshit 'jobs' that many Americans weasel their way into, how do you propose that 'everyone telecommute'?  What about the folks that actually do things at their jobs like miners, farmers, truckers, doctors, construction workers, factory workers, etc?

Maybe if we all just 'worked from home' doing website advertising or something the world would be a better place?

No.  People starve.

I agree that if people need to be at work, then they need to drive; however, if they can perform their job function from a home office, then this is the way to go.

This could also lead into a discussion about the virtues of alternative energy.

yeah me too, isn't it awfully convenient they're claiming foul play was involved given that the rig is now at the bottom of an inaccessible area under a giant oil spill and the ocean?

gulfripper is correct, as a matter of fact, only forty something percent of every barrel of oil goes to fuel, the majority goes to other products...including you bicycle seat, tires, paint,  brake pads, and the oil used to lube everything.
