Writing an argumentative essay for my Aesthetics course.

Hello all.

I'm currently working on a paper, and my thesis is (very roughly) that you cannot define art because it is a subjective experience.

I would love to hear some thoughts on this, in agreement with and in disagreement with my belief. 

If you are familiar with Hegel, Dickie and Weitz, that would be helpful, but if not I would still like to hear your input.

Also, thoughts on the following statements (flaws in logic, or just general thoughts)?

-"Art is something that stops the world for you."

-"Art is not a category that can be discreetly defined, if it can be defined at all."

-"Art must be given its 'artness' through human appreciation"

-"Art for one person may not be art for another person, because of the subjectivity of aesthetic experience.  Many great works of art require some background knowledge of either the subject, or the artist, in order to truly appreciate said works."


Also, any thoughts on the phrase "work of art" as both categorical (that thing is literally a work of art) and evaluative (giving praise to something, "That painting is a work of art")

I'm all over the place, damn you dexamphetamine...

In your view, what is art?

Alternately, what is the nature of art?

fOR SOomething to be art. it must be on a canvas or scultped like in marble.

you can't point to a tree and call it art because you didn't make the tree. somebody else did.

I believe I agree with this.  But what about found art, like Duchamp's "Fountain"? (He found a urinal and placed in an art show and called it art, essentially)  [George] Dickie says that,

"The difference [between Duchamp's "fountain" and a plumber displaying his wares] is that Duchamp's action took place within the institutional setting of the artworld, and the plumbing salesman's action took place outside of it"

Thoughts?  I'm not sure I follow his logic.  Well, I think I follow what he is trying to suggest, but I don't think I agree with it.

Good point.  I'm struggling with whether or not I believe nature-objects are art.  Every day I look around and I believe that the world is a work of art.  It's not something I consciously think, but I do feel it.

I believe the reason people try to define art is to draw a line between art and non-art... right now, I'm just trying to understand why we need that distinction.  Why does art have to be made by humans?  I ask that sincerely.

Art is a stimulator for the senses. Our creations are just as natural as the beautiful/ugly world around us.

How could I forget the most profound thing I realized in my recent mushroom trip?  That is true.  We are a part of nature, although we tend to separate ourselves from it.  There is something uniquely special about being human, but then, if I were a tree or a cat or a mineral, there would be something special about that too.

So many things to consider...

Art is from the Greek word Techne, to make, as in technology.  Since that is the case anything made can be construed as art.  It's not my view, its fact.  As to its nature I cannot say without your definition of 'nature'.  But yes, you are correct, it is technically impossible to judge the quality of art without predefined standards.

De gustibus non disputandum est.  About matters of taste there is no disputing.
