I haven't much looked in to the philosophy of aesthetics but I may be choosing a module in it at uni this coming year. Its something that has fascinated me for a long time...why do humans worldwide appreciate 'art' and have for countless millenia? From physical beauty to aural beauty, aesthetics has played a big part in shaping civilisations across the world (even though the Sixties architects seem to have forgotten about it). Music, in particular, is a universal method of communication and I would say one of the most popular forms of expressing ideas and feelings throughout the world.
Is there a scientific explanation? Why do humans have such an advanced sense of beauty compared to other animals? I can understand how it can serve as a survival advantage if it means that people choose more attractive mates (and hence better genes?). What reasons do people believe explain this? And why do so many drugs enhance this sense so much?
