What do you all think about aesthetics, or the "philosophy of beauty?" Personally I find that art is something that can't really be technically described, at least in its purest and most beautiful form it ought not to be. As Kant says (roughly paraphrased), as soon as one begins to scrutinize and pick a part an object of beauty, the object becomes less and less beautiful.
I dunno', I just smoked a bowl of cannabis and I started to think about it a bit, heh. I'm also taking a philosophy course in aesthetics this semester.

Aesthetics is the motivation behind every value that any human holds.
Don't turn that into a theory though

I love Kant's description of the sublime.
When we experience something which is larger than the categories of our understanding, there is freeplay between the sensibility and the reason, (beauty touches the soul). Any attempt to describe the experience of sublime beauty fails, because language necessarily employs the understanding and its categories.

Beauty has some sort of pattern to it, as opposed to chaos.
We are humans. We become enraptured in patterns. These patterns are not pure random, they represent emergent rythms that spawn out of the random...life, itself.

I think beauty is truth, and truth is beauty. When someone manages to depict the truth it gives us a feeling of paradise because it reminds us where we belong. It seems like a novelty because we are used to living in a decayed world. I don't think there is randomness to beauty, just perfect wholeness.

The aesthetic of beauty...when something that exists objectively has beauty there is a subjective, unconcious truth about its nature that you can recognize. Its nature cannot be described in objective terms, and yet its beautiful nature exists in the objective world, there, in front of you. It has quality. It is of God.
