Question about roses - I know it's not entheogenic, but you guys/gals can probably help me!
    #12460704 -

Let's say for instance I purchase a hybrid tea rose.
I collect very fragrant roses, and especially roses that have won the James Alexander Gamble Fragrance Medal.
Very few have won it to date, I believe 13 total.

Anyways, here's my question:
Let's say for instance I purchase a rose named "Mr. Lincoln".
http://everyrose.com/EveryRose.lasso?-database=RoseDatabase.fp3&-layout=detail&-response=%2Feveryrose%2Froses%2Fdetail5.lasso&-recordID=34663&-search

Now, this is regarding the flowers and seed production. If I take pollen from the flower, and fertilize the anther of the same flower, will it produce seeds that will grow exact genetic replicas of Mr. Lincoln??

Thanks everybody, and I apologize, but I felt that this was the most appropriate forum.

Kind Regards

No they will not be genetically identical.  To do that you need to take cuttings or utilize some other form of asexual reproduction.  If you grow the seeds out though, they will still contain some of the same genetics.

I will answer your question with another question....

If YOU have kids, will they be exact genetic replicas of either you OR your girlfriend/wife?

The answer is no, and this is especially true with plants....

Seed is generally not "true to type" meaning that it is random, just like children... Random genetic mutations, recessive/dominant genes all come into play to make this swirling bundle of genetic randomness that we call life...

So then the best bet for preservation is to take cuttings.

Okay. Thank you all for your help. I'm very gracious.

No need to apologize about the subject matter!
All ethnobotanicals (by my definition, plants used by people for any reason) are okay to discuss here! There is a lot of great non-entheogen content in this forum too!

I actually encourage and love seeing any and all plant cultivation and identification related questions.

It shows that our members are more broad in their knowledge and aren't concerned strictly with getting high.

Absolutely... and as iFennario just said, Ethno simply means Ethnic, as in groups of people... So any plant used by people is technically an Ethnobotanical....

Also, I have cloned roses before, a long time ago... They clone pretty easily, I did it in normal soil, outside, with grocery bags upside down tied over the tops of the pots to make a humidity dome of sorts...

What about senescence? Especially in old garden roses and stuff. How do you get young cells, but an exact duplicate of said specimen? I would imagine seed, but as somebody stated. Seeds won't be an exact genetic match.

Just take your cuttings from a vigorous, healthy motherplant, most production nurseries use this method without problems. By taking a cutting from the plant you are in fact "cloning" it and the resulting rooted plant will be an exact genetic copy of the mother and retain the desired traits. Whereas like others have said a seed will share some of the genetics but not all of them. Also if the rose is grafted it will lose the fast growth associated with grafted roses so the cutting will need to be grafted onto a vigorous stock if the same growing properties are wanting to be retained.

If you have a number of good specimin plants and want to create lots of exact duplicates you should look into home tissue culturing.

Thanks guys.

Yes most of the roses are grafted, but I do plan on taking cuttings so they all become "own root"... That's one of my goals with all of my roses is having them own root... I guess I'm just picky.

I'll checkout that link too.

THanks!

It has nothing to do with being "picky" or not.... As karode said:

In other words, he is saying that if you do not regraft it, and the clone you are taking from IS a grafted plant, that it could grow slowly/poorly and not even flower nearly as much, or even hardly at all...

In the cases of plants and cacti, the graft provides more nutrients. Is that basically why good graft stock is chosen? Just because it gives whatever is grafted onto it that extra "umph"?

Well in some cases, some of the plants that are grafted have completely inefficient, inferior rootstocks to begin with.... As I said before, sometimes they might not even flower at all...

In the case of some fruit (kumquats and most citrus comes to mind) they don't even produce hardly any fruit at all if they're on their own roostock so they are typically grafted to another type of citrus, usually citron, because it has an extremely hardy roostock, but not really all that great of fruit... So the two combined make excellent fruit that is extremely productive...

The same goes for some grafted roses.... So if you like how productive the roses you're going to clone are, and they are grafted, and you choose not to graft them... They won't be nearly as productive

Hey is that all agar that his little plants are growing out of?? Is the agar acting like the "soil"?

Better than soil.  Soil has to be processed via roots and photosynthesis into building blocks and energy.  Agar doesn't.  If you did your job right it already contains everything the plant will need for some time.

With some cultivated plant species, specimens are grafted to rootstock that is more disease-resistant, or better suited to the local climate in addition to the reasons themallacht stated (efficiency, yield, hardiness, etc)

You need to buy the book "Plants from Test Tubes: An Introduction to Micropropagation"

Theres also yahoo groups mailing list and kits that are relativly cheap.
