That would be very helpful.
It's very confusing when people are using different words for the same thing, or the same words for different things.

There needs to be a Beginners Page
with some of the basic terminology and teks

That would stop a lot of the repeat growing questions.

The Mush Cult forum expects people to know certain basic things
and simply using the search engine can be a huge waste of time

I agree with that niteowl.  It should obligatory to read.  Like in the main "Welcome to the shroomery" message, it should be there.  Right now, the primary focus of the welcome message, at least as of august 2008 when I joined, is how to update your profile and other various formalities.  The closest it comes to any sort of a "Here's some things you should learn on your own because no one feels like answering that question anymore" is a referral to the FAQ, Glossaries and Policies.  That's fine, but it should be more in depth than that I think.

There's tons of great information in the archives
it is just real hard to get the specific info you need
if you really don't know what it is you need to know

a page with some grow basics would be greatly helpful IMO

Exactly.  Rather than say "UTFSE", we should say "Here's the questions you're probably going to be asking in the near future as you embark on this journey called learning.  We'll save you the effort by answering them before they arise."  If they don't read the answers to those questions, it's their own fault, or if they come up with other questions, cool, but which is why we should also have a beginner forum so that those who don't read the answers to those questions or come up with some different ones can post the questions as they wish without bothering those who are sick of answering the same ones over and over.

Being a Noob my self i agree... BUT... BIG BUTT pretty much all questions including terminology abbreviations and acronyms are very easily found all it takes is a lil looking for. LOL Im a Noob but have been lurking around for a long time reading, searching, learning. Its very simple. The funny parts is I still dont really understand the shroomerys search engines........ So everything I ve learned(and I d like to think i really did learn alot) was found via google....LOL Neat huh? Well now that i finally officially joined the shroomery family maybe Ill take the time to mess around with them a lil, but i just seem to have better luck googling.

I agree with Niteowl for the most part .. just some basic info on myself I'am just one to do more research then most i guess. I think this will be good overall when we get together some basic terminology some basic teks and what not.  It just frustrates me a little when some one comes on like what do i do then you say well here is this and you know from what they are saying they have no idea what so ever what to do .. and they are just like well tell me.  Guess it's just my perspective that the newer generation on here .. just wants an outcome without some of the trial and error that comes along the way!  Overall really think we need to push a message also once you get some basics down it's not a disaster to experiment see what works for you.  but overall if we could get some basics together think it would go a long way and I like seeing some of the newer guys with the AMU ask me .. it's right on.  but everyone is great overall .. but some ego's need to be smashed at the same time; I believe there needs to be a way for the basic info without the bullshit.  I get shot down all the time from noobies  just because of my post count.  Been around for years and believe myself I know what the hell i'am doing .. Shit sure got in enough trouble being young and dumb knowing what i was doing at least on one end of the equation. LOL

In my opinion, the biggest killer here at shroomery is misinformation. It really, really sucks when someone asks a question and some random user tells them the wrong answer as if it were right.

I see this happening all the time, every damn time I search the forum for useful information (before posting, like a good boy) I want to bump the four-year-old thread I found just to say, "Hey guys, this particular poster is dead wrong, and don't take this to be fact". There's no method in effect to protect the beginner from this, and it's the most frustrating thing I've dealt with in my learning experience. Sadly, we can't teach them to moderate incoming information with a powerful sense of doubt like some of us do.

If you can do one thing to help the beginners, shield them from misinformation somehow.

who gets to decide what is misinfo and gets power to censor posts? how many people would evacuate to a diff site if that was enacted?

The above post is fictional, hypothetical, or downright nonsensical.

I don't know, and I certainly don't advocate censorship. I just despise the spread of misinformation. Perhaps a centralized bank of agreed-upon knowledge could overcome this... sort of a wiki. Could we do a wiki?

I have no doubt that happens frequently, but could you give a few examples, a link or two perhaps.

>Could we do a wiki?<

Personally I don't see how a wiki would prevent the 'spread of misinformation'. A good example of that would be Wikipedia.org.

Just as in real life you wouldn't take the statement of some random person as absolute fact. You do have to "consider the source". Here at The Shroomery you can filter the information, as you obviously have done, by the poster, their ratings, Trusted Cultivator, Trusted Identifier, their growlogs, etc.

It would be helpful to identify the commonly asked questions by new users so we can point them in the right direction until they have overcome the short learning curve of searching for themselves.

That has been what I have wanted for YEARS now. I have even talked to people about starting one independently. It would be PERFECT for Shroomery. As it is now, the threads are like someone took an encyclopedia and notes and opinions and shuffled the papers up and threw them in a pile and said "here is a search engine, find your answer".

If you could say "i need help with Liquid Culture" then you could go to the "Liquid Culture" section, and find people talking about it, then you may say "well, I want to know specifically about Turbinado" so under Liquid Culture you click Turbinado and so on. All facts, opinions, debates and so on, could all be categorized under tree's of subjects. This would stop people from posting the same question because they say "I couldn't find the answer" even if there was an answer.

extremely simplified example:

Cultivation
.
*Liquid Culture*

-Basics
...
-Honey
--...
-Karo
--...
-Turbinado
--...
-Malt
--...
-Others
--..
and so on.

Because it would categorize every word into its own page or thread. So all right and wrong information would be in 1 area, that way you don't just come across wrong information and not find out it is wrong until after you fail. Not only that, people could elaborate and expand the information rather than making completely isolated separate posts that may not get found.

The main site is basically a wiki. You can go there and add the example you just gave and other can contribute to that as well.
