Ythan, are you talking about ....

or

How to Navigate the Shroomery 101

because I think you're talking about option 1
and everyone else is talking about option 2

:justdontknow:

i think both should be included in the 'getting started' section

I think he's talking about both. Which is why I think there should be one place to point people in the direction they need for basic growing skills and a place on what to expect on the boards and such.

Regarding suggestions of adding wiki type pages; The majority of the main site can be modified now. Any registered user already has the ability to add or edit content on the main site. While not in the wiki 'style', it has the same function. So adding another wiki page would be redundant, imo.

Could you explain how?  Because I just tried to find a way to edit a tek and I couldn't find one.  I know that you can indeed add a new tek if you want, but that only allows for a lot of possibly bad information to clutter things up, rather than allowing people to correct bad information.  With wikis you can change something someone has posted if it's incorrect.

Well, maybe not everything is editable. And maybe not everything even should be editable. PM me the tek you are referring to, and I'll take a look.

That's what we're debating though, it should be.  I'm not saying that any particular tek is bad or anything like that, but if someone has the initiative to go through and clean up how the tek itself is organized, it should be allowed.  That's really up for debate though, some people may disagree.

this one is because the original pf tek says to tape over the holes with masking tape. i've pointed this out several times but the admin doesn't seem willing to edit peoples' teks.
"After inoculation of the jars, tighten the lid bands and retape the needle holes."

Also it makes not reference to GE. It talks about loose or tight lid as a factor of moisture retention only.

tho they added the following warning to the pf tek 2.0

"A NOTE OF WARNING

The PF TEK is a few years old now and there have been significant improvements to the different procedures. Any actual errors in the original document have been corrected but the actual procedure has been left intact, even if it is a bit old school.
This does not mean that the procedures described here will not work, in fact they work very well, but along the way people have come up with complementary methods which improve this TEK even more. That said, this text teaches you the basics that you will use during the whole of your mushroom cultivating experience and it is probably the best starting point into this hobby.

So read this, try and fully understand it, and then read about the upgrades to the PF TEK in the Basic Cultivation Guides section."

However when you go to this Basic Cultivation Guides section, this "pf tek upgrades section" doesn't seem to actually exist. Instead I find a section called 'cake faq' that makes no mention of GE, even tho its the biggest mistake noobies make. Also it's hard to navigate thru this menu generally.

As a nOOb myself I would find it very helpful if some of the TC's would collaborate on"the best practices" on some common issues which I have fallen into the trap of using good teks but not "best practices" For instance..I used regular 1/2 pint tapered jars from "ball" to do the PF tek..yes I watched the video and heard him say use wide mouth jars..I also watched a video of someone using drinking glasses..I saw one guy say leave tape over holes and another guy say take the tape off. I used a panel nail to make my holes in my lids. Some of the holes were too small to get the syringe in but only a couple...then I read that for good GE I needed 1/8 inch holes...covered with micro pore? not covered, just let the dry verm layer do its filtration thing?.Today I saw a tek using a paper  punch used on 2 piece lids..now that was easy and very effective. I guess my basic point is there are many very old teks..I even saw some that suggested doing your work in an open oven if you don't have a flowhood...seems like sometimes the more I use the search engine the more questions I have rather than definitive answers from someone with proven results.

I wish there was a way to search by the latest info available. IE..I have read from 2 TC's that LME 1 tablespoon to a quart of distilled water is just as good ad LME and Dextrose. Roger Rabbit swears that incubation temps should be no higher than 82 degrees and gives what seems to be scientific reasons for this..however a large % of the teks say make an incubation chamber. I wonder why so many noobs ask the same seemingly "dumb" questions??

I have learned in only 2 weeks that wide mouth jars are worth waiting for even if you have to order online because the tapered jars take twice as long to colonize..well mine are colonized to about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the jars now...but if they were the shorter ones I believe A) the initial innoc point would have nearly reached the bottom. B) I would have fully colonized jars right now.

If I could time-travel 2 weeks back I would have studied LC first and made cultures before wasting so many spores and cash....I certainly would have not completely used up any one strain without making a culture first.

I know that there is a lot of trial and error and patience is a necessity..But like my Dad always said if you have to walk thru a minefield...walk in someone Else's footprints if you can!

You can't teach respect, you have to earn it, but some people will never learn.
