I just realized I said "mainstream crackpot" which is kind of an oxymoron. 

It just happens to be that the crackpots make entertaining television.  This, in turn, makes it seem that the public is being conditioned to fear contact.  If you look at television documenting human space travel vs extraterrestrial encounters you'll notice a huge difference in tone.  Anticipation of something great vs fear of the unknown.  The majority of UFO shows remind me more of those BS ghost story shows rather than the great feat of ET contact.

There needs to be a show made similar to this.
