BRF cakes pinning!!

Well, its been a very long journey, but the destination is in sight! I started with 12 1 pint jars. After pressure cooking them i noticed the top piece to keep the pressure in was missing (it was my friends PC, very old school). Inoculated them anyways, lost five to contam, the other seven stayed strong. It took them over a month to fully colonize.. some started to pin while still in the jars.



when i birthed them, i picked the pins before trying to take the cakes out. I had a very hard time getting the cakes out of the jars since the bottom 1/3 of the cake was still pretty snug with the jar due to slow colonization. Needless to say, i had to tug a little bit :\. A few did slide out quite easily thankfully. I dunked them for around 20 hours (didn't roll them) then put them in the FC. That was about 2 weeks ago ( I birth the 2 that were pinning two weeks ago, put them in the FC, I gave the other 5 another week to try and finish up their colonization, but still had trouble getting them out of the jars) So there are 2 2week old cakes, 4 1week old cakes, and a jar that i just cased with wet verm since i couldn't get it out of the jar without ripping the damn thing in half.



Now for the exciting part :thumbup:
I woke up this morning to find some small sprouts!



these are on the base of one of the 2 week old cakes. I'm very excited to see how things turn out. Does anyone have any tips to share or any personal experiences that would help me out? Thanks a bunch everyone, everyone that helped, everyone that makes this site so amazing. I owe this grow to the shroomerites :thumbup:

Oh, and no need to comment on the fact that i used pint jars, I'm never using brf cakes with pints ever again.. hah.

Just mist and fan and give them 12/12 light using a 6500K bulb(daylights)

mist 3-4 times a day and fan right after always. Fan 5-6 times a day. Water evaporating off your cakes will be your biggest pinning trigger.

Pint jars do suck for the PF tek they yield less then a 1/2 pint jars and are prone to stalling and take longer to colonize.

Get these jars next time

Very nice.  And you really should have rolled them.  I have noticed on the cakes I don't roll, they perform horribly compared to those I do roll.

Haha well my friend that has been growing for a few years told me that it really didnt make a difference, in his opinion they are ready to fruit when they come out and dont need to colonize more substrate, but i will roll half of my 12 half pints that are colonizing atm, see how it differs. I can see how rolling is a good idea though.. and to be honest its my first grow so im just very eager.

The roll layer does help hold a micro climate on the surface of the cake. It is not like adding more sub for the myc to colonize its just verm

Yeah, the verm layer also helps keep the cake hydrated as well.  It doesn't dry out as quickly.

You want the dry verm layer on the surface of the cake to go though a moist then dry alternating pattern. Misting and fanning. Water evaporating off the cakes surface/dry verm layer is the biggest pinning trigger

Question about fanning.. I'm using a Shotgun FC..  I got a box fan for my room.. Whenever I fan, I take my box fan, and turn it on facing my FC.. About 2 feet away from it, For 5-10 min..  That sufficient?

All you need to do is take the lid off and fan it with that for 30 seconds to a minute 5-6 times a day

the 4th and 5th cake arent pinning yet, but they do have some gnarly looking growth


Is that healthy or something i should worry about?

Also in regards to cake one and two, should i flip them? or will the pins mature the same on the bottom as they would if i flipped it?
Any pointers would be appreciated :mushroom2:

Don't flip the cake its fine the way it is.

How long have the cakes been in the FC. ? Next time give them a roll in dry verm after the dunk

cakes number 1&2 have been in for over two weeks, cakes number 3-6 have been in for just over a week, along with the cased jar. But remember, they are pints, and werent fully colonized when i birthed them, im convinced the center of the bases were still colonizing since they were still air tight with the jar during birth.

Why birth them if they were not done. Not only should they be 100% colonized after that a they should consolidate for another week before birthing. You also used pint jars, to be honest I would not expect much from them

i know this. this is my first grow. i was very excited and they were starting to fruit in the jars. they wanted out. i realized when they were still colonizing after a month, that this wasing going to be a trophy grow. why you gotta be a downer man?
