St Georges Mushroom UK Soil Preference

Hi I live in the south of England, have some very good mushrooms spots around me. Never found the esteemed st georges mushroom though...

Wondering what the preferred soil pH is, acid or alkaline? On hills or low-lying areas? In cropped fields/ fields with livestock or in unmanned fields?

Hope someone can answer, that would be a great help. Just waiting for the next rain...

Calocybe gambosa in Wikipedia: It is common in grasslands and woodlands in Europe, often in areas rich in limestone.

Dont know if this help you or not, but good luck for your hunt!

Some pics taken from last May, they were growing on grass.

Thats helpful, thanks a lot. Recently read that they grow on both acid and alkaline soil, but did not know about the limestone, are you sure about that info?. If so I live on a limestone hill! :cool:

About the location, I also read that they rarely venture into the woodlands... but that was in a UK mushroom guide book... might be different for mainland europe!
