Philosophy has always been open to rhetoric corruption.

Philosophy does not get killed by rhetoric distractions but rather gets stifled.

Rhetoric is one of the oldest schools of philosophy. If it died that long ago, then where did all that non Greek philsophy come from?

I consider it one of the oldest parts of philosophy. What is it that you're thinking of when you say Rhetoric? Because I mean the methodology of public speaking pioneered by the ancient Greek philosophers, the aforementioned Sophists.

The way I understand the term, philosophers search for truth whereas sophists employ persuasion for materialistic benefit.

Philosophers think about stuff. The whole "quest for truth" nonsense gets tacked on by philosophers who want to try and be relevant, but it's just thinking. The Sophists, who believed there was no real objective truth, saw that it was subjective truth that was getting people places. The legal system of the time didn't have a bar exam or well written laws, so, like now, it was a matter of hiring someone who could convince the judge that you were in the right. The judge is not an omnipotent being who will make his decision based on some kind of ideal logic, he's an old dude who decides things like an old dude would. So instead of studying some ephemeral idea of right and wrong that could never be proven or show results, they studied how people reacted and thought about things.

I suppose in there own way, they did search for and uncover one single truth that's been relevant ever since. It doesn't matter what you say, as long as you say it well.
