Overkill? Or just right?
    #12404326 -

Thank god for tape cuz I can always repair this kind of mistake, But I wanted to run it by you guys first of all..

I wouldn't even consider it a mistake yet, as much as I consider it insecurity and paranoia

But my question is, My fc :

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-Oval-ShowOff-Storage-Containers-Set-of-6/13220035

Think I put too many holes? I have a tendency to overdue things pretty often.. What do you guys think?

I was gonna go with 3 or so inches of perlite and 2 maybe 3 cakes..  What you guys think??

Appreciate any and all feedback!!

If there are also holes on the bottom of it, Then i think your fine :tongue2:
You are going to want a lot of air flow for a Shotgun! The even better then about that is if it appears that you did in fact put to many holes, You can always just cover them up.

I think the bigger problem is that the top is opaque. You're gonna have to rig a light to the sides, enough probrably won't be filtering in from the top.

It looks fine but I cant tell what size it is,  I even clicked on the link.  If it is larger than 10 gal then you will want atleast 4 or more inches.

what are the dimensions on this thing?  it looks really tall, you're probably going to want more than 3 inches of perlite...  Also, this seems like MAJOR overkill for 3 cakes...

:biggrin::thumbup:

Prefecto! Those are some of the most homogenous holes I've ever seen drilled into a shotgun.

Now the fun part, misting and fanning relentlessly.

And you will need a more translucent top. You could rip off the bottom and use the top as the bottom, as it will fit well with the perlite. You just need to be as precisely constructive as you were with the drill holes. Then you can also use the bottom, (top), for fanning, it would just have to be cut carefully and maybe surrounded with a rubber sealant.

It works, and your babies will get much better access to light.

You can never have to many holes, it wasnt overkill. RR even puts holes on the bottom so the pressure inside pushes CO2 out the bottom or something.  And if you are doing PF tek, you dont need to worry about CO2 to much, especially with only 3 cakes.  Just fan it out and mist it,

the more perlite the better to hold perfect moisture longer. put ur hand on the bottom side make it two or three inches above that. that makes it so it holds moisture longer.

Perlite will remain hydrated for months, so you don't need to wet it every weekend. Your mushrooms won't abort because of going two days without misting, provided you've built a proper terrarium and have 3 to 5 inches of well-drained perlite inside. Something else is wrong. You can mist mushrooms. They thrive in the rain.

Good call indeed... Think it's gonna be a big deal not having any holes in the top?  Doesn't seem like it would be.. But then again, I have no fucking clue! haha...

Thanks again

I might consider a small 4w fluorescent plug in light - put inside the terrarium for a bit of heat. A tiny bit of heat goes a long way with evaporation.

As for holes - you're good to go - the more airflow the better, don't be afraid to mist a bit along the way either.

You put that in a room with indirect sunlight it should pin just fine. You can also aim light in from the sides. I see no problem with the top.

LxWxH in inches then multiply .55 (the amount of fl oz in a square inch) then divide that number by 128 (the amount of fl oz in a gallon) to get an accurate amount of volume for the space.

Dont worry about putting a light in it for heat, room temp will be fine. Use whatever lights you have but dont put one inside, thatll just be a pain in the ass.  No holes in the top needed, just open it and fan it several times a day and mist.

If you have holes in the bottom, wont the water from the perlite run out the bottom. I never could understand why you'd put holes in the bottom. Seems like it would make a mess.

You don't want any standing water so yes the water would run out but it is supposed to.  Perlite is a very porous rock and the water on the rocks evaporates and creates humidity.

also all the holes provide FAE. fresh air exchange. and after u put all the holes in the bottom of the bin u need to rest it on something so the fresh air can go under it and up threw the perlite and spread the moisture around. i propped mine up on six half pint jars to get it up in the air.

So it won't get water everywhere if the water content on the perlite is right? Right?

Good to know. I'm about ready to set one up so I guess I'll put the holes in the bottom. Makes sense now. Thanks.
