How I think the Shroomery and the Mushroom Community Can help Haiti!.

Haiti is in a terrible situation right and has been for quite sometime now. I think members of the Shroomery can help to provide food, safety, education and health for the people there. My the first thing that comes to mind is oyster mushrooms. We all know that oysters can be grown on many substrates found in Haiti and the countries in the vicinity. The oysters can provide protein for the people there which is most defintely lacking in their diets. The rains are coming soon too which is a recipe for pathenogenic illnesses to breed and attack people. We can use the spent oyster substrates to clean up E-coli bacteria and reduce other pathogens. We can build rainwater barrel collection systems to store water for the dry seasons to come and to use for pasterization of substrates as well as drinking water. I believe mushrooms can provide elegant, natural, cost effective, and safe methods in order to help the struggling people of Haiti and eventually other developing nations. Lead by Paul Stamets, whom I would like to contact in the coming days, (given there is enough support from Shroomery members) I think we can find solutions. If you are interested and have ideas of your own own please post responses. Please try and stay on topic.

any "charity" which will spend millions advertising nationwide is suspect in my book
i'm not saying NO money goes to Haitians when you send that text thing, but i am saying that you've got no way in hell of finding out, and 9 times out of 10 the company with a multimillion dollar ad campaign isn't really looking out for the little guy

OP, i really like this idea -- i don't know how easy oyster mushrooms are to grow, but i'm a Stamets fan and it's very obvious how this ties in with his work

i think it's a genuinely good idea, and something that a few buckled-down good samaritans could actually get done
