i'm not an expert, but from what i understand, the answer is yes

the justification i have heard for this is that getting healthy people into the insurance pool is the only way to keep costs down for the people who really need health care coverage
ie, if only the people who wanted or were likely to need insurance all got insurance, the cost of insurance would go through the roof because all the insurers would be suddenly paying for a lot more care
to offset this, the cost is being spread over everyone

it IS socialist, but honestly i'm not gonna pretend that i have a sophisticated enough philosophical/ethical understanding to say whether that's a good thing or a bad thing
i know that if i needed health care, i would sure as shit prefer it this way

one would hope that people would naturally create this kind of medical system, one where everyone helps cover everyone else's back, but people are more selfish than that, and some people can barely afford to cover their own backs

i've also heard that there is a provision in the bill for individual states to opt out of mandatory coverage, but i don't know the specifics

you'll get slapped with some fines for sure, and depending on the right-wing radio hosts you listen to, even potential jailtime

The tax penalty if you refuse is not that big, either, if you are really deadest on refusing healthcare. If this actually lowers costs for healthcare plans I'd be surprised, in theory thats what it should do, by getting more people in the pool.

Also I'm not sure why so many people are cool with not having any health coverage, do they think they are immortal? Luck always runs out eventually...

Gonz is too 'cool' for health care I guess.

He's not the only one. For someone like me who never goes to a doctor for anything and probably never will it's a shitty deal.

Yes.

If you do not, you simply pay more in taxes.

If you're paying taxes in the first place, then you likely have a job. If you have a job, and it's not at the fast-food window of McDonalds (although I wouldn't doubt it if they had excellent health benefits tbh), then your employer would likely cover most of the cost. This includes small businesses as well since they now receive tax breaks up to 50% of the cost of coverage.

If you're healthy and under 35, you can get pretty good coverage for $25-$50 a month.

FWIW I'm in your boat, but have a decent job. This bill should be the final push for my employer (a small business) to finally provide us employees with coverage.

Depends on your coverage plan. It's unlikely however very possible.

IMO the majority of people are way too dependent on doctors for their health
and on authority figures for their opinions, and on society for their morals, etcetera

people used to live in real communities with significant horizontal association structures, but it seems like over time, horizontal associations have been severed and replaced by vertical ones
doctor tells you what to do, news channel tells you what to think, etc

mandatory health care is good if you don't like making your own decisions, and not making your own decisions has become the norm, but i'm not sure this is a trend that we ought to continue any further

I'm under 30 and never ever go to the doctor unless it's for pills or medication I want for recreation. We are in the same boat for the most part. The thing about life is that SHIT HAPPENS, accidents namely, and it's really nice not to be left out in the cold and denied proper treatment/rehab when that shit happens. I think the tax penalty for not being responsible for your own healthcare is justified because the rest of us will be picking up the tab for your expensive ER visit at some point.

Example, if you are uninsured walkin minding your own shit and a car knocks the fuck out of you while crossing the street and they take off never to be seen again, you probably won't get the care you really need to recover fully (you gotta permanent bum leg), and may be under a shitpile of debt for which you will forever be harassed for. Id rather just pay the $30/month (which is what I pay now) and not have to worry about it, I almost get killed by cars daily riding my bike, so maybe I think about this shit more than most people?
