think that's one of the more persistant myths.
i've never used a drip shield of any kind and have enjoyed great success over the last few years.

I use the Ultrasonic set-up from time to time but have never used a drip-shield. I do case though, more than I use cakes, but since when I do grow out cakes un-cased I spray them every now and again directly, I assume that the condensation droplets wouldnt hurt the cakes, as long as the growing lid remains sterile. If not the droplets could transfer germs.

Hi,
In my opinion drip shields should only be used if your only form of humidification is direct spraying with a water bottle. I've used humidifiers, but I like perlite. Point is, I haven't used a drip sheild in a very long time.

The size of water droplets that come out of a water bottles nozzle is way too big for a mycellium network to handle.

If you're using any other form of humidfication...I would say you don't need it.

you also loose a lot of space if you use a drip shield.

[loathe does the perlite dance]

errr ...

I've used different methods including USH, hand-spraying, perlite, etc .. and I've never used a drip shield..

To each his own. (c:

Have fun.

The girl he had dragged along to the pub with him had grown to loathe him dearly over the last hour, and it would probably have been a great satisfaction to her to know that in a minute and a half or so he would suddenly evaporate into a whiff of hydrogen, ozone, and carbon monoxide. However, when the moment came she would be too busy evaporating herself to notice it.
