Why do you use a drip shield when you can dunk a cake?

The Magic Mushroom tek says that the purpose of the drip shield is to prevent the cakes from being "rained" upon. It goes on further saying that it is an absolute if you intend on hand spraying your terranium. If your using a spray bottle that produces a very fine mist though, wouldn't it be okay to directly spray the cakes, since you can dunk them?

I have a drip shield installed in both of my terraniums, and use a fish tank bubbler and a spray bottle. However, I was thinking today I could turn my drip shield into a multi story terranium, doubling my capacity (or near double as long as I can keep my humdity up and give it enough fresh air).

Drips of water may damage sensitive mycelium that are attempting to pin. Too much concentrated water slows growth.

When you dunk, it is done prior to pinning and the mycelium is rehydrated and allowed time to heal any any trauma received.

Light misting does no damage to pins (read  this) , and a drip shield is nothing but a waste of space IMO. Your idea of a two tier terrarium sounds great.  :smile:

Occasional drips are fairly harmless, but a consistant drip may saturate which is detrimental to growth.

When I use flat terrariums, I slightly tilt them. This causes any drips to slide down the sides. If you do this, you can use your drip shield as a shelf without worries.

Great idea by the way.
