I don't use one either i don't have any problems and my humidity is like 100%. I could see how they could help, but it isn't required.

We're newbies and still learning, but I think it depends on what form of humidification you're using. If you're hand misting you definately need one. With an ultrasonic humidifier it's optional. With perlite I don't think you need one at all. We're using an ultrasonic, but still have a drip shield to be safe.

>>>i mean if you think about it... in the wild it does rain... yes but if you look at the natural environment and cycle of the mushroom it fruits best after rainfall (when the mycellium 'drinks'). and afterward the grass or whatever surrounds is moist and keeps the microclimate humid for pins to form and they fruit after the rainfall. water falling heavily on the primordia can harm them. i dont use them right now but i plan on it in the near future possibly because i may be going to build an ultrasonically humidified custom grow chamber; and im not sure exactly how much water will be falling from my outlet hoses until i try it. (syill gotta buy a humidifier yet too). just dont let a heavy layer of moisture fall on your cakes while pinning or fruiting; mist heavily between flushes or dunk.

It will definately depend on what you are using to raise the humidity. If you are using a humidifier and water droplets start to bead on your cakes, you'll need one. Diffusing through 2-liter bottles will decrease the need for it also. Free Spore Ring

We used three 2-liter bottles, and there is still a lot of condensation throughout, that would probably be dripping. So in our case a drip shield is necessary. Why take the chance if you're using a humidifier? You can always remove it. shrewman1
