Have you already birthed these cakes, but left them in the jars? I don't understand that.

Anyhow, the shrinking is something they do when drying out, they might also bruise/blue. I don't think its ever a good idea to spray cakes directly, it may moisten them but will prevent pinning. The only safe way I know to rehydrate cakes is PF's double-ended casing method.

And you certainly don't need 24 hr air exchange for cakes..

They are still in the jars-I was waiting until they were finished colonizing. Now that they "shrunk" they have not grown any at all- their bottoms are still uncolonized!
I had heard that constant air speeds up the process yet I dont have anything to compare this to. 1cc per jar-half pint-ten days to get everything but the last quarter inch of the bottoms.
Maybe I should have mixed them after the first five days but I was worried about contaminating them. I would of shook them but the brown rice flour, flax seed meal, vermiculite, and "rolled rye" substrate that I used caused them to "clump" together.
I've heard alot about not useing rye because of contams but I've got none yet...I had to improvise the rye for finch seed per HAWK MAGIC FORMULA because I forgot to steep me seeds!!!!!

Okay, cakes naturally shrink as they grow with age.. not usually much in the jar but its quite possible. They are probably shrinking due to as you say, dehydration..

As for a way to get them to grow.. its hard to say really, for me if nothing else worked (and you are limited in things to do since they are still in the jar) I would put them in a humid terrarium and let them grow the rest there, and they will, especially if you put them directly on damp perlite.. but its risky this business is because obviously you are susceptable to contamination.

Also, I've had dried cakes which appear to be not growing and then I've opened them up to discover they are contiminated in the core with not visible signs or smell. So.. depending on how colonised they are, perhaps.. perhaps you should put them somewhere where they can rehydrate, ie on the perlite..

Anyway, I'm sure you'd like more than one opinion on this so all those who can answer.. put your word in..

use a syringe to inject a couple cc's of sterile water into each cake.
