CPU Usage around 70% when running HD video if that helps. I think thats why its getting choppy. will that offloading thing help?  and how do i do it?

i dont know where that overdrive thing is i have the catylist thing. how do i find overdrive? and where do i find XMBC?

This is how I do it for my version of Catalyst Ver. 2009.0203 :

1) Double-click the red-n-white "ATi" logo in your Task bar, icon area (the one with the "speaker" volume icon).

2) It should open up "Catalyst Control Center". On the left column, at the very bottom is a statement with a meter icon called "ATi Overdrive(tm)". Click it once.

3) Since its your first time, its likely locked. Click the "padlock" icon at the top of the menu.

4) Now you can adjust your GPU clock speed, GPU memory speed, and best of all, watch the GPU usage AND GPU temperature on the right-column.

5) Enjoy the Catalyst experience!

---> I see, 70% isn't that bad...if it was 99%, then I'd worry. Make sure you check the GPU meters when you get it started up....

With XMBC the video is good but the audio is choppy. I am trying to play a movie that was very choppy with vlc and its in 1080p. the video is great but the audio is choppy. they keep saying the words twice.

Bummer about the audio, but at least the Video works!

....Hey, can you take a screen shot of your Catalyst? If you need a really good free Screen Grabber, I suggest Screen Hunter Free.

That's weird that the audio is off sync...Hmmmm....:strokebeard: ya got me on that one..,

Damn, it looks like it doesn't have it...

Here's what my ATi Catalyst looks like (along with my entire Desktop. See: Life)....

I think its just your card was not made for overclocking....but its still pretty good. Hows that audio, is it still messed up?

If it is, I don't know what to do about that....close all your programs. How big is the file you're playin? Sometimes it can be lag in the Hard Drive, or just not enough memory.

And there's my Digital Life

the file is 9 gigs im playin it off an external hd. thats sweet how it shows the temp and shit wish mine did that. i got 4 gig of ram and the card has 512mb but i dunno. guess its as good as its gunna get.

Yeah, I guess so....

Yeah, the temp read-out is pretty sweet: I just wish you could switch it to F degree! Damn metric system....stay in sciencific fields like you belong...

But its weird when it says "0%" GPU usage...shouldn't it be at least 1% to produce the video for running the OS and stuff? Doesn't make sense to me....Oh well.

9 gigs is really big, maybe some memory issues? and its an External hard drive huh? How is it interfaced? USB or SATA maybe? USB is kinda slow, even the 2.0, especially if you're running video off it. Anyway to copy it to your OS drive?

If not, the fact that the HD video is smooth is evidence it works. Maybe an audio card issue? Who knows, you stumped me....

It could be audio card...

I have a P4 2.93 compaq and the mobo just so happened to have a built in HD audio card (coax) and i played an 11.7GB transformers 2 1080p with no glitches at all.

It COULD be audio card, but i have no idea what you have so

Specs:

P4 2.93 GHz
2GB ram @ 333MHz
GeForce 8400GS 256MB
Realtek ALC880 8-channel High Definition Audio

Once i got XBMC with the Direct Show Player build (thread) (download) it worked without a glitch.

You have to manually tell it which player to use when playing the files tho, i havent quite gotten DSplayer to work automatically. (manually by being in XBMC and going to the file and right clicking on it which brings up a menu, go to 'play with...' and it has DSplayer as an option)

ever hear that saying.. It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt?

yeah.. its kinda like that.

USB has plenty of bandwidth to support 1080p video with 5.1 audio. 9gb is a pretty average size for a movie in a 1080p video format. if this is shockingly large compared to whatever you download then you do not play HD video.

and the entire computer industry uses C instead of F.

Fastfirebird, play with the settings in XBMC to see what works best for you. the sound glitch just sounds like there was a random error with the application either that or the file is fubar.

if you are actually getting proper gpu offloading there should be plenty of horsepower left to run a measly audio card.

you can hit the \ key to bring XBMC out of full screen mode and check cpu usage if you need to.

Oh just read you're using XP - Don't.  Download Win7, and you'll be golden.  It's waaaay better performance if you have a multi-core CPU.
