Video Editing Software?
    #6283079 -

I have a ton of random videos taken with my digital camcorder over the years. I'd like to edit them and transfer to DVD. I have a DVD burner.

I don't have a clue on how to do this. Seems like I would need a Video Card which had an input or something for the camcorder, or is it done through USB?

I have a fairly new computer which I built, I think it can handle video to some extent. Maybe not as powerful as a dual cpu Mac or something.

Anyways, what programs do this stuff, and can I get them for free or do they all cost money?

Most digital cameras use Firewire or USB 2.0 to import to the computer. You will need one of those to transfer from your camera to the computer. The video editing software I use is Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro. You only need one but I do extensive video editing so I use each program for different features.

Cool, its a Sony too. I have a 2.0 USB connection...

It never came with software (that I was aware of).

Sony Vegas cheap version is only $90 new... Thats not too bad I guess.

Firewire faster than USB 2.0?

Get vegas if you're experienced in video editing.. which i doubt you are.

Get Adobe Premier if you're looking for more a more basic type of software.. Premier should not be under estimated though, it's quite good.

Final Cut is where it's at, if you've got a fast Mac.

Touche, Penquarky. I used to think so, but Avid has better color correction and audio suite tools. Final Cut is a little more user friendly on the effects side of things. Tis all personal preference.

Thanks you guys for the replies.

I have NEVER done any editing, but, I am very savvy with the computer and think I'll be able to figure it out.

I personally just need to cut out some stuff and put music in the background. Maybe put some words on where I am at or something.

Its just a bunch of surf video I have from since I was 9 yo, (That is not on digital). I would like to collaborate it and put it on DVD.

Can you get an Audio/Video adapter or something for your video card? I have a dinosaur video camera with some footage Id like to throw in...(From when I was younger)... how the hell do you do that?

Thanks for this thread. I was going to ask the same question, but I keep forgetting about it.

You need to get an analog to digital converter for your old footage. They're pretty cheap.

I use Sony Vegas for producing movies.. it's hardcore in that there's a billion and one options.. but kind of limiting for noobs like me, since it has a pretty steep learning curve. Either way.. I use it and virtualdub exclusively (to compress it).. I couldn't tell you anything about the other programs.. but this one is amazing and quite powerful once you get the hang of it. I get better and better every time I mess with it.
