Olympic Luger dies in accident today

A Georgian luger was killed after flying off his sled at nearly 90 MPH today...

They're canceling the luge for this years Olympics. I gotta wonder why the walls there weren't higher or why those steel beams weren't padded.

Even if the beams were padded, thats not going to save your ass from going 90-0 in less time than it takes to blink...


Its fucking crazy watching that video. I've luged before... Only got to 60 MPH, but its a fucking intense ride. Cant even imagine what that felt like. I bet he was freaking the fuck out for a second or so before the impact. You can see him going into that turn at an awfully low angle, only to be slingshotted up at the end and back down...

ugh.

I heard them saying lately that this track was extremely fast.  Probably the fastest in the world.  Many of the competitors have been clocked well over 90mph in practice.  Some have been saying it would be better served to have a slower (hence safer) but more technical track.  Still, I think its too bad they decided to cancel the event.  A real bummer for those who've spent a large portion of their life training for this.  But I guess it better to miss out on the games then end up dead.

Do they have separate tracks for other events like the bobsleds?  And are they running the skeleton again?  That event rocks!!  I'd hate to see everyone lose out just because they closed down the track.

I'm not an Olympian but I imagine that 80%+ of those Luge participants would have without blinking continued the race.

You think they don't know that death is a possibility?  You'd have to be lying or hiding from yourself.
