am i the only one here who sees the irony in trying to make flying down an ice tube at 90 miles per hour "safe?"

Really though, it was only one guy that died.
http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/olympic-games-deaths-list-athletes-killed-during-olympics-2575124.html

It happens. If you don't see the possibility of death while going down a hill of ice on a little metal sled at 90 mph, you shouldn't be in the sport.

If the poll wouldn't have been there he would have been rally fucked up. Tumbling to a stop from that fast would end up putting you in a lot more pain than instant death.

There was some some Jimmy Fallon sang covering the dangers of lugeing, but I can't find it right now...

Edit: Found the lyrics... it was before the 2002 winters

[ singing variant of Nickelback's "You Remind Me" ]

"Never made it as a luge man
couldn't hack it on the bobsled
now you don't have to remind me
of how I will get hurt.
You don't have to remind me
haven't done it since the forties
go down a mountain like 50 stories
all the drugs that I'll be takin'
for all the bones that I'll be breakin'.
I will cry
I could die
you'll have to find my body at the bottom
these few words in my head, saying,
"Don't die
don't die
Don't die on this sled."
Yeah, yeah
please don't die on this little sled!"

If it was this one Lugers fault then why shorten the Men's course at all?

I think it's pretty fucked up some of you guys have this "he had it coming" attitude. People don't go into dangerous sports like bungee jumping or sky diving expecting to eventually die due to some human error. They go into it knowing they have estimated the risks but carefully taken the precautions that should be met with an expected certainty of safety. There's always an astute number of assholes professionally ignoring the fact that a father and mother have both lost their kid. Even if you completely ignore the awful thing that happened to Nodar, consider all of the jokes and hate-mail both his parents are undoubtedly going to receive from dickheads who use time out of their life to mock a death.

The people making these jokes should also consider that perhaps these athletes from poorer nations don't have the best education due to being in constant training and not having the resources for the education. If all these kids know is their sport and nothing else which it usually seems to be, then it's not their fault for taking such risks because they don't have a fair grasp on the actual situation. All these guys know most of the time is their sport.

And what really makes me mad is that of all places there shouldn't be anyone here who thinks that if you take certain risks you deserve the consequences. For god sakes you fucking idiots, you all do drugs and grow them. Would you guys be so accepting the next day when you're sitting in a patrol car after a bust? Do you think us shroomerites deserve the kind of legal problems that can come with our cultivation? Is it just? It isn't and if you still think it's funny then you should probably reconsider logging in next time.

Yes, it is a bummer that he died, but like stated before it was one person. You can't worry about every single person that dies, there are almost 7 billion of them.

People die all the time, and the media shouldn't make a big deal about one guy who dies. It takes the focus off the people who are suffering and dieing.

At least he was killed pretty much instantly.

I must have forgotten somehow that 1 life is worth less than 7 billion. At what increment does one life become worth more than another? Is it ok to kill one person to save two?

This is going to probably make me sound like even more of an asshole, but...

I really don't find that much value in human life. I am against suffering because nobody should have to go through that, but for the majority of people their only contribution to life is ruining what gives it to us.

I guess the main point I'm trying to make is that in the grand scheme of things his death really doesn't matter, my life or death doesn't matter and not very many other people's do either.

This part makes no sense. If all he knows is the sport, wouldn't he know the risks especially well?
Are you even talking about knowing the risks? I don't get it.

I didn't read the whole thread, so maybe people have been bigger dickheads about this than I realize, but I'm not sure people think that he "got what he deserved."

The way I see it is, if you put 200 guys on sleds and rocket them down ice tracks at 90 miles per hour, hundreds of times, it is pretty reasonable to expect that one of them will have a catastrophic accident.
There's a difference between not being surprised when something happens and thinking that the thing was supposed to happen or was somehow deserved.
