Speed Walking Olympic event

My friend said he saw this on TV the other night. Olympic speed walking. Apparently, you have to have, at all times, either one foot on the ground or both. If you're caught skipping or jogging, you get a flag, and if you're caught again you get disqualified. They have people misting them down every quarter mile or so to keep cool. One of the Olympians stepped on an empty water bottle and tore a hamstring, taking him out of the competition.
And they're getting rid of baseball because its 'too American'.
Olympic speed walking? You have to be kidding me.
Edit- the entire time he was describing it to me, I was just picturing a bunch of people all speed walking like they really had to take a shit. Backs rigid, walking as speedy as possible.

I don't understand why paintballing isn't an olympic event, it is actually a pretty cool sport to watch.

I see a lot of erudite sport people around here. Every single event requires the determination and awesome skills of each athlete, and fast walking in my opinion is harder than any marathon.
Anyway my guy got a silver medal in fast walking, Jefferson Perez, he collapsed after the race or should i say walk?. The dude is OK. He retired after it.
HE is the only athlete that got us a gold medal and a Silver this time. He was the youngest person to win that event when he got the gold. And he is 3 times the world champion. And he came through again!!!
I fucking LOVE YOU Jefferson.

I bet you couldn't do it not even a mile, even with training.
For somebody that eats psychedelics it is funny that you cant see the intricate performance they are going through.
But since you know everything, it is just walking.

Eh, I think you're wrong, as walking training precedes potty training.
I guess the art of walking can be viewed as an intricate performance in a country of people so fat they need motorized weelchairs... But I still don't think that makes it special enough to be an olypmic event.

The trick is to do it FAST.
Do you have any idea how fast racewalking is?
Right before the games started, Francisco Fernandez did the 10km in under 38 minutes.
Thats about a 6 minute mile, for 6 miles if I'm not mistaken.
How many of you could run a single 6 minute mile, let alone 6 in a row?

Boy, I jog 6 miles to school every day and do it in 35 minutes.
When it rains, I lay down and do the breast stroke in a half inch of water on the sidewalk for 6 miles to school.
When it snows, I hop the six miles on one foot because I only have one snow boot.
Those speed walkers ain't got nothin on me.

I think that and MMA would both be great additions. Pride MMA rules would be awesome.

it's been an olympic event since forever... the walker that tore the hamstring was an ecuadorian... one of the other 2 ecuadorian walkers won the silver medal... he had already won the gold medal in the olympics of 96 in atlanta...

Actually, the original Olympics only had a foot race as the only event. Over time more were added. Speed walking was added in 1904, but it was only a half mile race.
And to the person wishing MMA were included...

Over the years, more events were added: boxing (pygme/pygmachia), wrestling (pale), pankration (regulated full-contact fighting, similar to today's mixed martial arts), chariot racing, several other running events (the diaulos, hippios, dolichos, and hoplitodromos), as well as a pentathlon, consisting of wrestling, stadion, long jump, javelin throw and discus throw (the latter three were not separate events).
I guess originally there was a type of MMA in the Olympics.
