Cool science stuff from lab practicals (viruses and mutants)
    #12008615 -

There are a lot of scientists here on the Shroomery. So why not post your shit here and u can find someone with similar interests

Aspergillus mutants. Did some experiment on the pigment synthesis.

Bacterial viruses growing on a lawn of E.coli. Todays experiment on restriction-modification systems.

The same as above. Check out the viral destruction

Prophase and telophase in bean root tip.

I like the pigment synthesis one.

Too bad all of my pics are of boring gels...I did have a few pics of different bacteria and combinatorial wells but I can't seem to find them..

Gels are fine. Post some but give a brief explanation of the experiment :yesnod:

Dug up some old pics from a biochem teaching lab I had a couple semesters ago...

Nucleic acids cleaved with Pb2+ (more specifically lead acetate) on Urea-PAGE.  Pretty streaky so they were prob degraded some before the experiment.  Looks like I fucked up pipetting the first lane (far left of image).  The second lane is RNA without lead acetate (control), the third lane is RNA with lead acetate, the fourth lane is DNA control, and the fifth lane is DNA with lead acetate.  As you probably already know and can get from the picture...Pb2+ only cleaves RNA and not DNA.

I'm trying to match these up with the lab reports...I THINK this is a crime scene lab we did.  Basically we had two samples of DNA from the "crime scene" and we had two sample of DNA each from two different suspects.  Cut with restriction enzyme and run on agarose, yadayadayada...you know the drill.  Pretty decent gel now that I look back at it.  Can you figure out who did the crime? haha

If the two lanes on the left are the DNA from the crime scene then I'd say that suspect 2 was the killah. I'm going to do my first gel on next weeks practical and I'm quite eager. I've solved some textbook problems based on gels and shit but I'm a bit clueless here

Shouldn't there be a lambda ladder and whats lane 7 for?

1 and 2 match with 6 and 5, respectively.  Same DNA...just different endonucleases used.

Lane 7 is the MW marker I believe, either that or lane 4...sorry, didn't include that in the caption

6 and 5 is suspect2 right?

Anyway that looks good. What exactly is the title of your degree?

Here are some more microscopy pics

Some tartaric salt crystals under polarized light

I caught a frog and had its eyes sectioned. Pretty cool shot of the retina.

A particularly aggressive brain tumour. Glioblastoma multiforme if I recall correctly.
