KAZAA VIRUS - W32.HLLP.Handy

I know there are many Kazaa/Kazaa lite users on this site. I myself have been a file sharer ever since within a week of the time that Napster first came out. I just wanted to share the the latest Kazaa virus news... I just got zaped with a virus that was first discovered on November 25, 2002. Thankfully my Nortons 2003 antivirus program caught it before the file was even close to being fully downloaded. I'm still reasearching what the virus really does because the Symantec (Norton's) site is rather tight liped in regards to the actual payload aspects of this virus. After many years of using the Kazaa network (from Morpheus to now Kazaa lite).... this is the FIRST virus that I have seen there.... For more info on W32.HLLP.Handy see this. Can anyone else advise more on this virus? Thanks.

The REAL irony is in how a copy of Nortains 2003 Pro downloaded from Kazaa can flag/stop a Kazaa virus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO!!!

Update: Within a couple of days of my Norton's first advising me of this virus, I ended up fdisking my master boot and the rest.... As it turned out.. some of my programs either stoped working or worked half-ass... So I fdisked my drive and reinstalled Windows... (perhaps I over reacted)

I recomend blackice, the best firewall ive ever used. only things i have problems with is trojans and people trying to hack my shit. so if u have a tendency to load programs that u dont know wat they are u will need a virus checker, But the added protection from BI is priceless. Most poepl are out to steal pw's and cc# anyways, u can always wipe ur computer and start over if u get a virus but once someone has ur cc# it kind of sucks.

I'm thinking about getting a hardware firewall... I know that the most popular firewall (free Zone Alarm) simply has too many holes in it these days, and I dont feel that the Zone Alarm people can keep up with all of the new tricks that hackers discover everday... I see Black Ice the same as I do Zone Alarm. As far as always being able to recover from a virus by wiping everything off the drive... etc.. Well, there is one rare exception... I have heard of virus types that corupt the bios of various popular computers (ex: Compaq, HP, Dell etc...) - It seems me that a virus of this nature might create the need for a motherboard replacement (asuming the bios cant be reset by disconecting/reconecting the battery). Indeed I have heard this is the case from people that work in tech support.

Thanks for the info link Alien! Did you see where they said this: "At the time of writing Sophos has received just one report of this worm from the wild."? How about that, eh? Either this virus is picking up speed, or I should play the Lotto next week!

It's still a software firewall however... and if BI had much over Zone Alarm I'm sure that people would file share it more than they do now (after all, it's been around for years).

Info on Klez and SirCam [Re: Jammer]

This is fairly up to date info on Klez:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html
Someone that didn't like some posters at a BBS I used to frequent started harvesting e-mails and sending Klez to everyone. I myself was sent around 20 infected e-mails before it finally stopped. It became a problem for a while for users of KaZaA and other p2p utilities, but I think p2p is getting around to implementing anti-virus software (KaZaA is).
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html
SirCam was truly a fun little worm. Didn't rely on exploiting Outlook Express or any other piece of mail software. It had its own SMTP engine so it took care of propogation all on its own. I only received this one once or twice, but it too made a round in p2p.
