I've noticed that with people I know in person, it seems that they don't know or want to really know how to use any of these other programs. Most of my friends are sticking with bearshare/kazaa, most likely because it is familiar to them and easy to use.
I still use bearshare for some downloads, but I like to use soulseek as my main client. I use bittorrent every once in a while, but not too often.
After reading your post I think i'll try out DC++ again, last time I tried it I got confused and gave up, but the same thing happened with soulseek a long time ago.

Everyone seems to disagree violently on which file sharing programs are best. I've used Kazaa Lite with no problems, founds tons of great files, rarely found any fakes, and never even once got a virus. I've always been baffled when people tried to tell me how awful the network was. I tried to use WinMX, but never had any luck finding anything worthwhile on it. I think it's all what you're used to using.
Right now I'm using LimeWire (essentially the same as BearShare, Sharaza, etc...), because for some reason giFT wouldn't connect to the FastTrack network properly. It's great, I've had lots of luck with it.

Getting viruses really depends on what your dowloading, if its music files I doubt you'll ever get a virus. If its programs the chances are way higher. Just the other day my computer got infected by the worm/krepper virus because I was downloading programs. It spreaded on all drives in many folders like mad, over 3,000 exe's created in a matter of seconds. Luckily I use both free-av and avg. Getting by both of those must be really hard, it notified me the second it started to spread . Why is it that no one wants to help me with my porn problem .

do you seriously use winmx and kazaa? I dont mean to give you a hard time, I just dont understand why people use those in face of such better options.
bittorrent is incredibly easy to get large files at once. whats so hard about torrents? you just download the torrent file and open it in the client and let it file(s) download/upload. it's pretty automatic.
No offense taken, your advice is greatly appreciated.
Just got soulseek, its very interesting. I'm still feeling it out, but it seems slow, may need tweaking...
I'll have to give bittorrent another try. What's the best client in your opinion (or am I using the wrong terminology)?
Thanks, nono

my favorite client is azureus however, ABC is quite excellent as well - easy to setup and use (azureus is a bit more complicated especially if you dont know what you're doing) - I recommend using ABC.
then visit a site like http://www.phoenix-torrents.com or http://www.suprnova.org and download the small .torrent file - open this file with your client. Be sure to reseed (let other users continue to upload from you even after you have completed your own downloading).

When it comes to getting full cds newsgroups or irc are the best.
Newsgroups i can download at 350+ kb/s consistently so ican grab mass amounts of stuff fast. mirc is better when im looking for somehting specific(full cd) that i am unable to find.
Kazaa sucks.
