Three 3 weeks old un-pasteurized straw vs. Phoenix Oyster top spawned.
    #11974894 -

Straw was washed in a stock tank with 2.5 teaspoons vinegar per gallon and a couple of squirts of natural hand dish washing soap.  Substrate sat on drying rack for 1 week then was bagged
one home made, and one filter patch bag were top spawned.  Today is Day 16.  The smaller home made bag is fully colonized.  The third bag was left alone but stayed in the spawn room for 16 days.  It is a little longer then the small colonized one.

Soap is a viable pasteurization method, but for some reason the yields are less than using steam.  Did you see the article I posted by John Holliday of Aloha medicinals a few weeks ago comparing yields on straw with various pasteurization methods?  If not, search back a few weeks.  It's up here somewhere.

I just read the article.  Neat I came to the same conclusion myself.  The most important part is the shred if you don't shred you don't get shit.  Even if your shredder ain't the best.  Run it through a couple a times if you have too.  After the shred I think that the steam and lime methods work better because they break down the straw like a super fast hot composting.  I have 34 soap washed 3 gallon bags top spawned and 7 steam pasteurized 3 gallon bags in Incubation.  All are spawned with a popular brown/Phoenix.  The straw was new or dry at least.  I got an itch that I will get a higher first flush then with a through spawn We'll see I guess.

With black bags, how are you going to know when they're colonized and/or not contaminated?

Is it possible to pasteurize with wood ash instead of hydrated lime?  Beyond the pH, does the lime add anything else to the pasteurization process?

I know wood ash would raise the pH too, and I have plenty of ash from the wood burning stove...

Give it a try and let us know.  Mrs rabbit makes tooth polish from the wood ashes, as well as lye soap.  I've never tried to pasteurize with it, but if you can swing the pH up to around 12, it should work fine.

I will give about a month or when/if they start fruiting in incubation.  I have interface issues with this variety.  However at $65 for 42 lb.s of spawn delivered, I have been reluctant to culture on my own but with the graphs I saw in the article from Aloha I may begin to try to culture AX which looks like a Phoenix I think. The mycelium usually wins, even if the bags contam a little.  I have had my worst contaminate problems when I inoculated and was not able to provide a steady heat for incubation. I am going to buy clear on the next plastic run cus I would like to know when there done colonizing, and it's cheap as pudding.  I have this weird hunch that top spawning may help solve the interface issue(Stamets wrote on it somewhere).  I will cut one open once a week for the viewing audience but I think that a month ought be plenty.  It seems like in the pictures of colonizing top spawned sawdust that after the bags go white they let them consume a little further.  My hope is that I will give them a good time to consume to get a nice big first flush so I can run more through the Grow House.  I think the bags will colonize at 3 weeks but I think/hope that giving em that extra week will help.
