not to mention cultures quickly senesce. You're much better off with spores.

I don't know of anyone who might have the spores. I know anno was trying to germinate gill sections from some dried ones. I'm not sure how it went though.

good luck.

Try this website http://www.mushroomsfmrc.com/cgi-bin/webc/home.html. This business has all manner of spores. Alternatively get a culture and fruit it, then get spores.

thz for replying folks...yes cultures from i am hearing dont seem to last long. also they are not storeable in the  refrigorator. everything about them is heat loving or tropical. oh yes r05c03 i am sure u are going to be careful  in ur wild type exploration of this genus...and i cant help but remember to watch out that ur specimens dont show up with a ring or annulus(?) because the look alike Amanitas will have the  ring on the stipe!!!   i cant remember the url  but some guys from Laos apparently mistook the Amanitas for their old familiar paddy straws. so  be careful. i am going to chk fmrc site but i dont think that they have V. volvacea but another member of the same genus. thz anyway ppl and may u have a contam free adventure.

Yeah, in fact when I found the first V. bombycina, I thought that I had stumble across some sort of aminita given the structural similarity, (actually I did not, I actually I thought I had found V. volvacea but I knew that that could not be true because they simply do not grow here in Indiana) but when I took the spore print and saw the cinnamon brown I knew I was dealing with something else.

As far as its growth and cultural requirements I have no idea how it compares to V.v. I have literally no info on cultivating V.b. so I will just have to play around with it for awhile.

I bought dried speciems in a chinese store and then isolated the gils on agar.
It worked, it?s just that I don?t have the right space and conditions to grow it at the moment.

i was able to find the url concerning mistaken identities between amanitas and volvariellas. i hope its not too much reading but i think that we can reference some differences between the two. also we get a chance to see at least two ofthe most sinister ones that should id and avoided...the Angel and the Cap. when i get a chance i m going to chk out the Gallerina(?) genus that seem to be commonly found in the wild.

Anno what ur saying is that  u were able to get some spore material in the gills to grow? the materials were  dried  gills gotten from a chinese store of the V.v. genus! what was the agar isolation tek? almost pure agar? culture isolated on to peroxidated/antibiotic agar?  the ( a few  ) details would be appreciated.

Hay Dudes & Dudetts,

With Millions of pounds of Paddy Straws being grown in the mid east, Obviously, NO one has a print in the U.S. Makes NO sense to me, AT ALL. I ve been casually looking for years myself!

TOO COOL, Anno!! I do have access to lots of Asain Supermarkets. I'll have to check them out!

I used to live at the edge on NY's chinatown and heard several stories about large scale sub basement cultivation of various Chinese staples.

It's hard to believe the massive amount of fresh straws consumed in the us are imported, especially since they are supposed to have a brief shelf life.

Resturants get fresh vv from their suppliers every week ... pass a friendly cook or waiter a couple of bucks and he'll probably hook you up with a few. It isn't as good as a print, but better than the alternitives.
