Straw problems

Yup, MushMushi always has problems... :smirk:
A few months ago, I have pasteurized straw, then drained. I have inoculated it with oyster spawn in a plastic bag.
The result: a complete mess in my room, a disgusting smell and millions of bacteria (or molds, or whatever) The mycelium never grew on the straw.
I have no idea why, maybe the straw was too wet?  :confused:

This time, I've bought oven bags (that I can put in the pressure cooker) but I definitely need a procedure on how to prepare the straw...
Should I pasteurize it, then drain it, then pressure cook it? Should this be enough?


After three major failures with an easy-to-grow mushroom, I became anxious and now, I doubt of my intelectual abilities.  :wink:

Make sure you drain the staw well, there should not be alot of standing water in the bags. You did not mention that you put holes in the bags. If you did not you must puncture the bags to let air in. If you have bacterial smell you have too little air.

Wait a little bit... Don't you have to poke holes only when the substrate is fully or alomost colonized?! :shocked:

No, holes to start with. If there are no holes you get anaaerobic conditions and bacterial growth on pasteurized substrates.

Problems happen all the time - I had similar problems, except that I got contamns after the first flush of P. djamor. It's not that easy to grow on pasterurized substrates.
I'm going to try biological fermentation next. It's briefly described in GGMM. The guy who is using it told me that you just keep soaked straw at 55C for about 24h. The benefical bacteria develop and destroy contaminants. After that you inoculate with spawn. The guy has great results with it, but I'm not sure if he revelaed me all details of the procedure.  :confused:
