Huxley predicted a population seduced by triviality, and that's what we have now
Orwell predicted violent dictatarian rule -- that's not as close a match

what we have is a democracy of manufactured consent -- violent coercion is more secondary

Let's take the Afghan war example, and compare it to a fire. Afghanistan is a burning building. It's hot, it's dangerous, and it is destructive to the surrounding buildings. Currently, we have some firefighters in the building, trying to put out the fire. A lot of the citizens in the city want us to get the fuck out of the building, and rightly so, there's a good chance it will collapse and kill a lot of the firefighters, plus innocent people in the area. What our fire chief is proposing (that's Obama PS) is that we send in some more firefighters to put out a bit more of the fire, stabilize the foundations so it doesn't fall over, and THEN get the fuck out. Seems like a pretty sound plan to me.
