Alternatives to 1984

I read 1984 in my junior year in high school but have loved it ever since.

Does anyone know of any similar books, movies, even video games?

All i really know of are V for Vendetta, the obvious movies of 1984 and i once played some game that was made solely of words and no pictures that had a very 1984-like future.

Check out Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale for an excellent take on a scary future.

read more orwell he is really a great author try homage to catalonia or keep the aspidistra flying both are great novels

Atwood has another book set in a dystopian future that isn't quite as 1984-ish but is still downright amazing, called Oryx and Crake. My favorite book I read all of last year...and I read a lot!

Brave New World... Huxley basically takes the exact opposite stance of Orwell, saying that the government will pacify the people by giving them exactly what they want: sex, drugs, entertainment.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
It's long, but has got it all.  Very objectivist.  It's message is 'don't work for the looters, work for yourself!".  Check it out.  I don't think it's really subtle or has hidden meanings like Orwell's books do, but it has been a great read so far.

Let's see..

Brazil by Terry Gilliam. Very dystopian and funny.
A Clockwork Orange of course. Either the book or the Kubrick film will do.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
Soylent Green with Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson. (I predict  a terrible remake starring  Will Smith within three years)
THX1138 by George Lucas before he became senile and devoted his life to space opera.
A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick is pretty dystopian too.
Watching Gattaca won't hurt either.

Sleeper by Woody Allen, not really dystopian but you'll need some cheering up after working your way through the list above.

i hated it tho had to read it in high school... rather read something by a real russian author instead of an anecdote related to the revolution through animals

i read a book that came out a couple years back called feed, and it's sort of like 1984 in a weird way. everyone has these "feeds" implanted in their heads and it's like having the internet in your head wired directly to your brain. so people can "text" simply by thinking it. so basically you've got a whole bunch of people that can't really think without their feeds and they just sit around in social settings saying nothing and communicating via their implants. it's a pretty interesting look at what too much technology could possibly do to human interaction and culture. it's an easy read, check it out.

GATTACA is a great movie! I highly urge any and all to check it out; we had to watch it in AP BIO and it blew me away.
