because I wanted to go to a tropical island anyway?

Thatd be like if I said I wanted to join the army and then added that I wanted to go the middle east anyway.

Everywhere in the world is somewhere Id like to go, how is having a reason to go there and do something beneficial in addition to my natural desire to see the world a selfish act?

I see your point with the taking of jobs thing.

I also shoulda elaborated that I still expected to pay for my transportation, lodging, meals, etc and that Id have NO PROBLEM working with the peace corps but they would not take me due to criminal record.

Sometimes what I think is the right thing isnt the right thing. I just wish it were easier to see what is the right course of action and what isnt. There are so many things like that where from one viewpoint something seems entirely rational and helpful and the other viewpoint it seems to do more harm than good.

At first I planned to dismiss your post with my usual closed minded retort but I honestly hadn't ever thought of it that way and now Im rethinking my entire view on the whole construction as a humanitarian effort thing.

Oh and NO. I would volunteer just about ANYwhere but Haiti.

I am not getting shot to death or otherwise attacked/maimed just for trying to help people.
