It's all the way to the back.  To the right of the three tall office buildings.  I mean it's sorta just a spec, but it's in the picture.

Soo, you planning on volunteering in Haiti?  How many organizations do volunteer work down there?

I have no idea--I imagine there will be a lot mobilizing projects down there in the coming weeks/months.  Probably the most prominent in the States will be Christian humanitarian groups, which usually take volunteers even if they aren't religiously affiliated.

If you want to goto Hattie join some branch of the military  special forces there's always a coup every few years backed by us.

I thought about it since I have some medical training. It is a human tragedy for sure. I think once my schooling is done I would want to go overseas and help but not or ever in Hattie. Its nothing against the people there.  Just to risky

In Haiti the U.S. backed armed group FRAPH which oust democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in a military coup d'état in September, 1991. Aristide is replaced with a military junta led by Raoul Cédras until U.S. President Clinton orders Aristide's return to resume his mandate as president.

sometimes your lucky and you get to goto hattie 2 times a year

Yep, it's no news to me our country has no problem toppling democracies when it suits geopolitical economic interests. Mohammad Mossadegh of Iran is another example.

Does anyone know if these volunteer programs are strictly volunteer or do they pay for transportation and a meager wage?

It depends, but it's doubtful, unless perhaps you are a specialist in something like medicine, construction, counseling, project oversight, etc.

I'd love nothing more to go there and help them. But certain restrictions with the law put a damper on that plan. I probably wouldn't come back to the states, but i wouldn't stick around there either.

Why would they need you there to do construction? If you're not a medical professional or an engineer, they don't need you for anything, there are plenty of people in Haiti who are willing to do the work, and who actually need the income.

I guess I just assumed there would be a big call for volunteers in the reconstruction, like there was in New Orleans and in the tsunami-affected regions.  You raise a good point, though.

I would love to volunteer, I even looked in to a lot of different programs.

You know what I found out? They are more than willing to except the help, AFTER you've spent a grand or more to pay for the expense's.

This completely ruins the idea for me. Where is all the donation money going?! I'm a broke student, there's no way in hell I would give them that much money. Far to broke to afford such costs.

I had considered this, but after such a tragedy do you think any sort of black market infrastructure would even still exist?

If your asking whether I want to travel to some shit ass country infested by gangs trying to seize power in the aftermath, and bust my ass for free, then no.

I'd be much more comfortable with an M16, plus I would get paid in the military.

Exactly, sheer manpower is not enough, they need capital to rebuild.  Plus the cost of keeping the volunteers safe and somewhat comfortable must be ridiculous.

In an ideal world, I would love to take the first flight down there and help out.  Just my own sense of self preservation, and the sheer amount of damage weighted with the realistic possibility that rebuilding is even possible makes me say no.

MrEd has a point. What about the protection of the volunteers? I'm not stupid, I know what's gone on in this country, I know what they do to each other. How is a volunteer to remain safe if we can't even protect ourselves?

Unfortunately, instead of uniting people under a common humanitarian cause of helping fellow human beings; Haiti has become a platform for the world's political disagreements and the spinning of propaganda.  It's painful to think of the hardships being endured right now..

Id love to. I was planning to visit a tropical island anyway, why not go to help out?

I looked into the Peace Corps a few years ago but they wouldnt take me.

As soon as I find a volunteer service that is not through a church or the peace corps and doesnt require a heavy financial backing Ill sign up.
